    Simultaneous Ripping

    Hello.

I have been working with a local community radio station to help them build a machine for Encoding their music library to FLAC.

I've built a machine with 3 SATA CD-Rs. I'm able to run 3 instances of dbPowerAmp's CD Ripper and rip 3 discs at a time fairly reliably.

Unfortunately, from time to time the machine totally locks up. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips or suggestions on how to prevent this.

The machine has plenty of horsepower and doesn't seem to really tax the CPU all that much. Seems to have something to do with I/O, etc.

It also seems like many times right before the lockup, one of the drives finishes and ejects and then quickly closes the door before I can grab the disc.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Pat

A lockup on XP or Vista, means that something serious has happed at a low level on the computer (cpu overheated, memory problem, bad driver).

Is this a "mouse stops moving, keyboard is dead" kind of lockup, or something else?

If you limit yourself to two drives, can you reproduce the problem?

        Re: Simultaneous Ripping

Several times I experienced a loud "beep" and then the windows totally locked up (no mouse, keyboard, etc).

Other times it just locks the system in the same way without a beep.

        I'll check for updated drivers.

But, is this something that the software should support?

I believe we only support running one instance of the CD ripper at a time, as this taxes the system's connection from the optical drives and the connection to the hard drive. If you just rip with one instance at a time, does it still lock up on you?
