    lost and confused

I have win98. OK, so I bought my registered version and I downloaded it. I’m
unclear what I should do now. There [were] some icons in my desktop (trial
version) I could click to start, but now those are gone. I can’t get this damn
thing to do anything! My client is getting pissed-off.

First, make sure these updates are installed: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/Windows95-Update.htm
Second, did you run the installer you downloaded? If yes and there are no applications on your desktop, they should still be in the start menu.

      Re: lost and confused

OK, let me explain what it is that I need. It doesn’tn work. My client has given
me a CD of a song she wrote, that she wants me to “digitize”, (is that the
right word?), so I can then upload it onto her website so others can listen to it. Is this called CD Ripping? My computer is win98. Per your instructions I downloaded both Microsoft things so my win98 can run your program, and now it appears to work. Last night, however, and all day today I set this thing to ripping her two songs - 5 hours last night and 7 hours today - yet it still doesn’t work! When I try to play it, it says “the data is invalid.”

Below are the instructions I have:

      Six quick steps to Ripping:
      Insert Audio CD
      [... ok ...]
CD Ripper connects to AccurateRip reading other peoples ripping accuracy results,
[... Do I have to be online when I do this? ...]
...then connects to All Media Guide to get track names and album art,
[...No it doesn’t. CD Ripper does *not* automatically start like it says it should. Instead, Windows Media Player starts and plays the CD. I don’t want that, so I exit and manually start up “DBpoweramp CD Ripper “...]
Tracks with a tick are set for ripping,
      [... OK ...]
Double click on a track (Power Pack required) to preview a track,
[... I don’t need to preview a track so I’ll just let this go ...],

Set compression format with Rip To, edit compression settings under Encoder tab,
      Path and Naming
[... nothing happens when I type in “Naming” ...]
...sets where Ripped tracks are saved, by default it is My Music, the actual filename depends upon the CD being ripped.
      Click Rip to begin ripping.
[... OK. Under Rip Status it counts the percentage completed, first “Ripping” then “Encoding.” The Encoding status never gets beyond 99% Am I just not being patient enough? Christ, I know my computer is slow - How long does it take?...]

You need to click the "Set" button next to naming to set it.

What format and settings are you trying to encode to? What are the specs of your computer, such as CPU type, CPU speed and amount of RAM?

          American Megatrends, inc.
          Intel Celeron - 500 MHz
          NVRAM . . 65536 KB
          Pentium 3 (I think)
          CMOS battery died years ago.
          --------------------
I’m not sure what you mean by format and settings. I haven’t changed anything from the default settings. A caveman-computer like mine, maybe that’s the problem. ‘Profile’ is set to default (I can’t change that). ‘Rip to’ is set to wave. ‘Path’ is set to C:\learn\ASP\scripts\Karin\music\help us today\. ‘Naming’ is set to Save in Dynamic Artist folder. ‘CD Drive’ is set to R: CD ROM 45X.

Wave encoder settings - ‘uncompressed’ is radio-buttoned, the others are not, and the three windows say [as source].

The song (1 of 2 on the CD) is 4:48 mins long.

In 2005 I used your trial version to rip a different song. That worked the first time! No trouble! Nothing like this!

To clarify, your format is "WAV" and your settings are "uncompressed", frequency channels and bits "as source".

Are your time and date settings correct?

If you change the "Path" to their "My Documents" folder, will it rip?

In the "Options" menu, what is the "Communication" settings on?

With Windows 98 you will get command line windows poping up, which have to be closed after ripping and encoding are complete (ie when it is 99%)

Ureka, now I can get all the way through! Now “Encoding” reads 100%. Like you said, all I had to do is close the msdos pop-up window.

But it still doesn’t work! Now I supposedly have the digitized music in my computer. I should be able to play it, right? I fire up windows media player and select the song from the directory structure, it still says, “the data is invalid.”

There is one problem. The speakers on my computer aren’t hooked up and never have been. It should still rip, though, shouldn’t it? It worked years ago with your trial version.

Instead of wave format I tried making it mp3 format. Now it does nothing at all, like it’s dead.

I tried it online and offline, still doesn’t work.

OK, In the "Options" menu, "Communication" is set to ASPI - there’s no other option.
Yes, time and date settings correct.
You said my format was "WAV" (without the E). No, it’s ‘wave’ (the default). I see a “WAVPATH” in there, but it’s not that. (WAVPATH is disabled anyway)

                  Re: lost and confused

dMC doesn't need speakers to rip your file, correct. When you say "WAVPATH" where do you see that? In the codec selection list?

When you say dMC does nothing when selecting mp3, do you mean it doesn't encode?

Try playing other wave files, it could be your media player is broken.
