can you hear the difference on an iPod -mp3 vs. losseless??

When I rip a CD, I use Lame mp3, set to vbr, 190kbs (standard), encoding "normal".

I presume a rip to apple lossless would make a larger file?

Can people hear the difference on their iPod? Is it worth the space??

    thnx,

It depends on the person, the headphones/earbuds they use, and how much music they have. To find out if you can hear the difference between 192kbps mp3 and ALAC (Apple Lossless), encode one song to each format and then test. Also, try encoding to a higher-bitrate mp3 and see if you can hear a difference then too.

Very, very few people can hear the difference, and that only under ideal conditions. There are lot of claims, but rarely do people do completely BLIND listening tests; so a lot of claims amount to placebo effect and/or marketing. -

v2 (192 VBR) is more than sufficient, I think. But if you worry, why not keep a backup of the lossless on an external hard drive somewhere? (500 gb is going for a little more than $100 now.)

There are a number of listening tests up on hydrogenaudio.org:
