Updating to r12.1 reference

Hi.

Currently I'm running r12 reference and I'd like to update to r12.1.

What is the suggested way to do so? First uninsalling r12 and all codecs or can I simpli install r12.1 over r12 (and all codecs)?
I've read in the forum, that some people seemed to had problems when doing the later.
Will (all) my settings be preserved when switching to r12.1 (either by doing an uninstall+install or installing over the current installation?)

Is there a list of current bugs known in r12.1? And a changelog for r12.1?

Best way is to reboot computer, then install R12.1 (problems come where files are in use, the installer has to restart windows to overwrite, on some systems these overwriting files go missing, so the file is not installed).
