dbpoweramp CD Ripper Hangs Windows XP

    Hello,

I am new to dbPowerAmp, but it was recommended by a friend. I am still in the trial phase for dbPowerAMP Reference edition. If I can get it to work I will buy it because I like the AccurateRIP and Secure features.

    System:
    Sempron 3Ghz
    1.5GB RAM
    Win XP Home SP2
    NEC 3550A DVD-R/RW/CD
    Generic ATAPI 52X CD-RW

I have tested using both optical drives. I have done the checks for cache, LUA and C2 error checks. Both drives check out fine.

Setup CD Ripper for Lame MP3 with VBR at highest rate. Options set to use SPT from optical drive. I have tried both Ultra Secure and Secure settings on a somewhat scratched disc. Everything combination so far using Ultra or Secure ripping results in WinXP totally hanging. It does not BSD, but it hangs so completely that I have to power cycle the computer to recover.

Is there error checking or some other configuration suggestions for me?

Does it hang on Burst mode, or just Secure mode? Have you tried leaving it alone to see if it finishes?

      Lt.

      Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I just tried in Burst mode and it hung on that as well.

I will provide some more history. I have tried this with a "clean" disc and it worked fine (in burst mode, did not try Secure). This happens to be an older and somewhat scratched disc that I am experimenting with. I know that no program can work miracles and make something out of nothing. I know my friends critical nature for ripping his collection, and he had excellent results from dbpa.

As far as leaving it, yes I tried that. The first hang occured as I left the ripper working on this same scratched disc to go to lunch. 1.5 hours later it was still stuck. Regardless I would think that no program should bring WinXP to a halt such that no mouse or keyboard input is accepted for very long periods of time.

I really like this software and I appreciate the support. I am willing to try other scenarios, please direct me as you wish. As a programmer, I enjoy the hunt for a bug, so I hope I can help to squash this problem.

      cheers,
      Paul

What version of dMC are you using? Have you tried r12.1 or the r12.2 beta?

In the Options menu, try scrolling down to the "CD ROM" section and changing the Communication setting to "Windows Internal". Does it still freeze in Burst mode?

If you rip the tracks one at a time, does it still freeze?

          Lt,

I am using the r12.1 reference download. I have not tried the 12.2 beta. I was reading the bug fix list of that and I don't see anything that would address this problem.

For the scratched disc that causes the problems, it has failed on several different songs (between 1-5) and on different passes of the same song. So, I can try one song at a time, but I am not confident that will help. It does not -seem- to hang at the end of a song, but it is sort of hard to tell where it is in the read vs. encode process.

I can try it on Windows Internal mode and let you know. It seems from reading the forum that if I use that mode I will lose some/all of the secure rip functions, which I ultimately want to have.

I will post back and let you know.

          Paul

I believe the only secure functions you lose is FUA cache clearing and C2 error pointers.

So I set it to Windows Internal mode for communications. I tried one song at a time rip. This is what I get from Track 1, which also happens to be one of the tracks that has caused it to hang several times:

Error ripping to mp3 (Lame), 'Track 1' to 'D:\Paul\My Music\mp3_accurate_rip_collection\U2\1987 The Joshua Tree\01 Where the Streets Have No Name.mp3'
Unable to read CD, check CD disc (frame LBA 32 ripping 26 frames track end LBA 25290) [clRipperBurst::Rip]

Trying other tracks, but I wanted to post this now, in case I crash again.

OK, so I went ahead and ripped tracks 2-11 one at a time. They all ripped as Inaccurate, but there were no crashes. I went back to track 1 and it work on another pass. Windows internal seems to work better.

I am now going to try to enable secure mode and see it does any better.

For what it is worth I do have a SATARaid controller which Windoze labels as SCSI, so I wonder if there is a low lvl conflict when running in SPT mode...?

                  Are your CD drives SATA?

Nope, the opticals are NOT SATA. They are both IDE.

So far I've ripped several tracks in Secure mode, and it hasn't crashed...

I guess Ultra Secure will be next on my list.

It seems that Ultra Secure works now as well. I have used both VBR and CBR.

Looks like SPT mode was causing the problems for me. I don't know if I have less performance or what the trades off are, but at least it doesn't hang my PC anymore (so far).
