Novice question: How do I boost the volume?

I have hundreds of mp3 files which I've recorded over the years that have varied volume levels.

Rather than continually turn the volume control up or down on my player or after I burn a disc, is there a way that I can tweak all these files so that the volume increase -- and that same volume is constant from file to file?

Install the DSP effects in the beta section of this forum and use the Volume Normalize on your files. Note that you do have to re-convert them.

You probably want to use the "Desired Volume" option for Volume Normalize. This method is explained in the help file included with the DSPs.
