ra to mp3 or wav conversion results in really small file and sounds like noise

    Ok,

-I am trying to convert some ra files to mp3.
-I just installed dMC v12 and then followed the directions and installed the codec:

-I attempted to convert many ra files to mp3 or wav. For each attempt, the result is the same.
-The resultant mp3 file (for ra to mp3) or wav file (for ra to wav) is very small (100's of kilobytes) and sounds like it is very very fast or noise when I play it.

-I can play the ra files in Real Alternative but not in Windows Media Player.
-I noticed Windows Media Player and dbPowerAmp are showing the same incorrect information about the ra files:
For example, one of the ra files has 29 minutes of audio (speech 6meg).
Windows Media Player thinks the audio in the file is only 6 minutes.
dbPowerAmp thinks the same thing when I move the pointer over the file in explorer.

-I am using Windows XP SP2 on a IBM Thinkpad T60p.

    Please advise...Thanks!

The issue is probably related to the fact that RealAlternative uses the codecs themselves, while dMC and WMP use the RealMedia DirectShow Splitter to play the files. If WMP reports the length wrong, then dMC will do the same.

What size is your .ra file?

      I have tried 3meg, 6meg, and 132kbyte ra files.

And all of these files result in a small file that plays quickly or is noise?

          Yes.

the 132Kbyte ra file once converted played for a split second.

The 3Meg ra file once converted plays for about 8 seconds and sounds like noise (like hearing a tape player when being fast forwarded). I am really reaching when I say it sounds like it is playing really fast. It may just be noise.

The 6Meg ra file once converted plays for a little longer than 8 seconds and sounds like noise.

Any ideas on what I should check to verify RealMedia DirectShow Splitter is setup correctly?

If WMP cannot play your file correctly, then it doesn't look like dMC will be able to convert it correctly. You will have to use a program that will record the song as you play it, unfortunately.
