RIFF chunk unknown

What does this mean? Is the WAV file format unsupported? I have gotten this error when trying to convert several albums to MP3 format. Here is the context for one album.

Error converting to mp3 (Lame), 'C:\Documents and Settings\John\My Documents\My Music\David Arkenstone\Quest of the Dream Warrior\Quest Of The Dream Warrior - 01 - Prelude.wav' to 'C:\Documents and Settings\John\My Documents\My Music\David Arkenstone\Quest of the Dream Warrior\Quest Of The Dream Warrior - 01 - Prelude.mp3'

OK, never mind. Like a noob, I forgot to search the forum first. I renamed all the wav files to mp3 and they work now. I wonder why they had the wrong extension?
