unrecoverable frames: solution

hi,

I'm using dbpoweramp reference. Is the only way to solve the unrecoverable frames problem enabling the option to interpolate unrecoverable frames or are there other options in dbpoweramp reference I didn't find?

Many CD drives will interpolate internally, try a test on a very scratched cd, if you can hear clicks then interpolate is needed.

ok, but what happens if I don't enable the option to interpolate unrecoverable frames in dbpoweramp? What happens then if it find unrecoverable frames?
Does dbpoweramp stops ripping or what happens?

It will carry on and accept what ever data the cd drive gave out for the bad part.

so the only solution for this is to enable interpolation for unrecoverable frames or are there other options? I didn't got a clear answer on this I believe.

I was also wondering what's the most "accurate" (as close as possible to the original data) solution when there are unrecoverable frames on a CD:

- disable the interpolation option in dbpoweramp and let the drive generate the data for the bad parts
- enable the interpolation option in dbpoweramp and let dbpoweramp handle the unrecoverable frames

which of those 2 options above give the most "accurate" result?

Why not try each one and report back which one sounds better? My guess is interpolation enabled.

because you can't "hear" the difference if for example 10 frames of the whole CD are unrecoverable. It can just be heared because it are to less frames spread over the whole CD.
So if somebody knows which could be best (in term of accuracy) please let me know

Enabling the interpolation in dbpoweramp will give a known result with all drives. It will be "pretty good".

Disabling the interpolation means depending on the drive to do the job. Some might do a better job (by using partial data that it doesn't pass on and using good algorithms to guess at the missing data), some might do a poor job. And this could vary disc to disc as well.

In both cases, if the run of contiguous missing frames is large, it'll sound bad, but that's just a disc that is either unsalvageable, or in need of a good cleaning/buffing session.

The safest option, in my opinion, is to enable interpolation. Even if your rip isn't accurate, it's less likely to include clicks (on average, assuming a test across a random mix of drives and discs).

I retract this recommendation, especially if C2 is enabled. In testing, I find that enabling interpolation in the cd ripper with C2 enabled leads to a lot of drop outs on damaged discs. With it disabled, the errors may still be there, but they are less noticeable.

The feature should only be enabled under specific conditions when you are getting audible errors and are manually checking the results of rips with it enabled and disabled.
