using source directory option in conversion

I am a paid up dbpoweramp user now by the way!... The conversion program is very useful as it's the only one i have seen that works both with wma & aac which i need (i use a zen, the girlfriend an ipod).

I keep all my files in flac in "c:\music_flac" which is also my slimdevices slimserver directory used by my transporter and squeezeboxs.

Now I want to create a new directory "c:\music_wma" which is all the same files in wma.

I tried the use alternative folder checkbox in the conversion options but it just copied all my wma files into the one directory without replicating the original subfolder structure that exists under "c:\music_flac".

As a result I copied all files and subdirectories to "c:\music_wma" and then ran convertor with the use original subdirectory option. I then deleted all the flac files using a little script i wrote that scanned all subdirectories. After checking this forums I have now learnt that their is in fact a delete original files option after all hidden away in the DSP menu - so in future I won't need that script.

Nevertheless it sill takes adges to copy my 100gb music collection and i would prefer to achieve all this without making a copy.... Is there another conversion option which can do what I want in one step - eg replicating the original directory structure in a new place?

If you have dBpoweramp Reference, you can use what is called "Dynamic naming" to use the entire original path, trim a folder off of the end or beginning, or create an entirely new structure based on tags.

Yes I saw that (hugely complicated looking) option but it's no good to me - I think. My files are not organised into directories based on the album, artist, genre fields alone. They have some customization... each time I rip a CD I set the directory manually. So I need to replicate the original structure... Is this possible? Ie as I described above I need to change the first directory from music_flac to music_wma whilst leaving all else unchanged.

By the way, I think this should be the default behaviour of the use alternative directory.. It's the obvious technique for converting a directory with subdirectories. Eg if I do copy in windows explorer on a folder I get all subfolders replicated in the new place. Ending up with all files in one directory is, frankly, very poor design.

You can use [origpath] along with TRIM. The exact context is: [TRIMFIRSTFOLDER][origpath][] would trip off music_flac but keep the rest intact.

Unless you tell the program to remove the first folder, it cannot guess to do so. Some people might want to remove the first 3 folders, with dynamic naming all these are possible, just a little learning curve.

how is this supposed to work?
              I put in c:\temp\[TRIMFIRSTFOLDER][origpath][]
and it started putting files in documets and settings blah blah.
Can you just give me the anseer based on my careful posts above please

You have write privileges to this directory, correct? You are using dMC r12, or so it looks like.

Can you convert other files to WMA? Did you also put [origfilename] or some other way for dMC to name the files? I think that might be the problem.

Ok to do you have to have:

                      Folder: C:\Temp\rita\

                      then (selected)

                      Dynamic: [TRIMFIRSTFOLDER][origpath][]\[origfilename]

Either that or, instead of [origfilename] put something like "[track] [title]". But normally, people just want to use [origfilename]
