LAME quality setting

Can you please tell me what effect this setting has?

I usually just use -V 2 --vbr-new - what does this setting change?!

From the mp3 help file that is installed with dMC:

Encoding specifies how much effort goes into compression, this mode is applicable to all types of encoding.
