I just downloaded this program and realize that I am in trial period, but would like to know before I purchase what the steps are to add album artwork.

It is added by default, if the codec and tags support it, as a tag in the file. There is an option where you can make the album art just a file in the folder you rip to called "folder.jpg".
For instance, FLAC only supports album art if you use ID3v2 tags and not Vorbis comments. Also, currently the m4a/mp4 codec does not support album art.
