    --vbr-new/ Secure/ Tags: General roadmap

Searched the forums and the above topics still aren't clear. My ongoing MythTV project has landed me into codec hell and after a few days of video and audio forums, I took the advice of Hydrogen Audio, arrived here and am impressed with the software.

    Goals:
    * Rip from either XP or Linux
    * Linux player required. Maybe Songbird, maybe Itunes in future
    * Ipod Integration. Seem like that eliminates wavpack.
    * That would imply the need to retain two files, .flac and lame .mp3

    Resources:
    * 1 Terabyte of storage and could allocate a few hundred Gig for audio.
Can't think of a compelling reason not to go with -V 0.
    * Very fast dual-core processor so processing time means little.
    * Perl/Shell programmer.

    Questions:
-- The lame forums recommended --vbr-new, is there a way to include this option with -V 0?

-- When ripping and accurate is reported, is there a need for secure, and in what circumstances would one select ultra-secure? Not adverse to the extra wear-and-tear on the readers, just curious.

-- AND MOST IMPORTANTLY: Please direct me to a source explaining tags: What format for directories or tags must I adhere to so that the myriad players e.g. Itunes, Songbird, Banshee, ... can import automatically. My first attempts have been miserable and I'm not against writing a Perl script if necessary.

    Thanks

Vbr new is used automatically with dbpoweramp (if using built in lame encoder).

Ultra secure would not be used if the cd is in accuraterip and is reported as accurate, saving the wear and tear.

Flac has its own ogg type tag, mp3 you are best with id3v2.

Thanks for the response. It's working out well now. It seems that Songbird had problems reading .flac file header info and misunderstood some of the .mp3 tags ... strange.

Anyway, decided on a parallel directory structure, one with the flac files and another with -V0 lame. Your batch converter works well in these situations and can even see having a third directory, for smaller Ipods.

*** Can I safely assume that directory/file name should not influence that importation of files into a sane player, and rather they are more for convenience and organization? ***

So it appears that much of my confusion regarding file names came from programs that couldn't read the .flac or .mp3 info, think one of the other Rippers supplied false information to Rythmbox and it had issues.

By the way, the new version of Amarok worked perfectly and seems like a viable route until Songbird matures.

      Thanks again.

Folder names and filenames should not effect players, unless there is a bug in the software.
