Keep getting errors when i try to rip disc

I am converting from cd to FLAC and the first 5 discs where problem free, but now i keep getting errors and the program just shuts when i press rip or maybe half way through it stops. Then i get the windows error reporting message.

If i change a disc it seems like its working but then i get another error again maybe halfway through.

Seems like i dont know how to discribe it in more detail - but anyone help me cos i seem to not be able to proceed.....

Re: Keep getting errors when i try to rip disc

For dealing with scratched discs under Windows, it is often useful to use a drive that is connected via something other than IDE, since Windows will permanently cause the access channel to fall back to slower and slower methods. SATA or firewire are good options, and USB 2.0 can be used, if the bridge chipset handles errors well (some do not).

...I suppose SCSI as well, if there are any reliable rippers that handle scratches well that connect via SCSI.

Its not really permanent, it can be fixed, but it does switch it to that mode and you have to force it to change back.

Yes, but the only user-accessible way is to remove the device entries for the IDE controller in question, which may be the primary controller on the mainboard, and usually is the secondary, forcing them to be re-recognized.

I consider this outside the normal range of device driver twiddling that should be acceptable for end users to perform. It annoys me almost as much as the USB devices that require reinstalling the driver from the driver disc every time you plug it into a different port!

Note: I'm not casting any blame here at dbpoweramp, this is clearly a Microsoft problem. I suppose it's "fixed in Vista".

I see there is at least one microsoft patch, that may already have be included in later service packs, that reduces the incidents of this problem, but if you have severely scratched discs, it'll keep happening, and you'll need to regularly strip the devices from the device manager and reboot.

To change them back from PIO mode you certainly don't have to force Windows to recognise the devices over again.

In Device Manager, find the correct entry under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers and go into the Properties. Under Advanced Settings there is a selection for Transfer Mode which should be reset to DMA if available.

That sounds like a user friendly way of doing it. I believe there is also a Registry Hack available for Windows 2000/XP that allows you to increase the number of retry's before it resets to PIO mode. I suggest you Google it.

Actually, sometimes you can't reset it back to DMA that way, Deano. When my CD drive was dropped down to PIO mode, it didn't matter if I selected "PIO Only" or "DMA if Available", it stayed as PIO. I had to do the uninstall and rescan to get it up to DMA.

oh so you think its a scratched disc that might be causing it . I does not look scratched and i have cds that look like the metal coating is peeling off and i have managed to do them ok.

just managed to copy a few more but then i get the dbpower software ha encountered an error again

SEEMS LIKE DBpower converter DOES NOT LIKE SOME CDs -

Im my winXP I dont have advanced settings. Strange!

Also I use a DVD player as my cd rom - would that have any implications.

Also those CDs that did cause an error in dbpower - i tried to ripp in EAC / autoFLAC. I was able to rip them but I can really hear any errors so, although I do get error message at the end, soooo........not sure what to do (the autoFLAC forum seems too "hardcore" programmers to worry about my silly error problems)

What chipset is your computer using? What do you see under "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers"?

My comp has INTEL 915P chipset

                      IDE controllers are
                      intel 8280 1FB Untra ATA storage controllers - 2652
                      intel 8280 1FB/FBM Untra ATA storage controllers - 266F
                      primary IDE channel
                      primary IDE channel
                      secobdary IDE channel

never thought this software might be so hardware sensitive (reminds me of the pre plug and play era)

                      Thanks for help!

Check the first two and see if they have advanced options for your optical drive.

Ok - there are no tabs or buttons for Advanced in my windows xp professional.

                          got me worried now!
