    FLAC to AAC

I used to be able to convert FLAC to AAC easily using the Nero codec. I tried to convert one file today and it would normally run for about 15 minutes, utilizing 100% of my CPU (2.4 GHz!) and then crash. It finished once, after 24 minutes, but produced a 0 byte .mp4 file.

I'm trying to convert the FLAC to a .65 quality AAC file. Any idea what I am doing wrong?

What crashes, dbpoweramp, windows or the Nero command line encoder?

Sorry, I guess that wasn't clear. The Nero AAC encoder crashes. The converter than finishes, but, of course, does nothing useful.

I tried it on another computer as well.

On Release 11, the NeroAACEncoder crashes.

On Release 11.5, the encoder seems to successfully process the file, but it produces a 0 byte m4a file as output.

Try converting the flac file to wave, does that work?

I can covert the FLAC to Wave on both 11.0 and 11.5.

I then tried to convert the resultant Wave file to AAC. On 11.0, it gets about 95% time, then stalls for about 2 minutes and eventually the Nero Encoder crashes. On 11.5, it looks like it coverts the file. However, the file does not appear in the directory where it should. It does look like it makes a file in C:\ called ~dmcout.m4a. This looks like it is the right file, but it doesn't have the tags in it. (I've tried having it write to several different directories and it never puts the file in any directory.)

What are the specs (bits, channels, compression, frequency) of the FLAC file and your chosen AAC file?

There was an old version that did that, Nero has to finalize the file after converting, if it takes more than 60 second then you are left with that result. Make sure you have the latest dbpowerAMP nero codec.

It appears I have the most current versions of everything.

Nero Digital Audio (AAC).dll is version 4.2.0.0.

                  neroAacEnc.exe os version 1.0.0.2.

                  Are these the correct ones?

My Nero Digital version is 5.0.0.0. I'm not sure where your getting the version number for the neroAacEnc.

Where do you get the 5.0.0.0 version of the DLL as it is not the one on Codec Central?

If you hover the mouse over the file name in Windows Explorer, a box pops up with the version info, among other things.

Also, from the web page that the help file sends you to to download the file says: "Download the latest version of Nero Digital Audio (1.0.0.2)"

Ahh, there it is. Check dMC Configuration for the version of the M4A codec. My version is Release 4 (Apple Lossless 0.1.5). If nothing else, try uninstalling the nero codec and installing the new version and re-copying the .exes from Nero's website.

I checked my configuration and it is the same as yours (looking at the decode tab). I uninstalled the codec and reinstalled. This didn't change anything, and I really didn't expect it to as I just downloaded the stuff yesterday.

I can play the ~dmcout.m4a file and it is a valid file. There just aren't any tags and it never gets copied to the right place.

                          Spoon,

When you were talking about finalizing after converting, is this done before or after the converter shows that it is finished? Should I go ahead and press finished or allow additional time to see if it finalizes. I've allowed it to sit for awhile, but nothing seems to happen.

I would assume before it says finished.

Are you running dMC as an administrator? Do you have write permissions to the temp directory and where the file is supposed to go?
