Question on write-speeds

Hello, its been awhile since I have posted, so, have not had to many problems.

I have an older model hp 8200 cd burner. I use 40x700x80min cd-r's. I can set the speed to 2x and it will burn 15-16 songs takes about 29mins . However if I set the speed to "don't limit burn speed" it will not write the same amount of the same of amount of song.s

On this burner the is 1x, 2x, 4x and don't limit burn speed. Could you explain to me in laymen language what the different speeds I show above represents.

The x in the burn speed represents the playing time of the tracks you are burning. The number before the x represents a multiple of the burn speed meant to be how much faster than playing the burning process is. So 2x means "twice as fast as playing time", for example.

So say you are burning tracks whose playing time altogether is 60 minutes. In this case the the value of x is 60 so your burning time will be:
-15 minutes at 4x;
-30 minutes at 2x;
-60 minutes at 1x

Don't limit burn speed allows your burner to burn the tracks as fast as it (and your computer and software) is capable of.

My general rule of thumb would be to try not limiting your burn speed first. If youfind this results in errors, then use 4x and if you still get too many errors, try 2x, etc.

In your case however, you have already found a problem with your "Don't limit burn speed" setting, so I would avoid it unless you want to try to troubleshoot the problem. If that were the case, it would be helpful to know what program you are using for burning. It would also be helpful to know more about what you mean when you say it won't burn the same amount of songs.

What puzzles me is that sometimes I was able to use a high speed cd and then it would not write.

By the songs, what I meant to say was, sometimes burning a cd with more than 18 songs it would fail, buffer underrun.

Cannot remember all the instances.

It sounds like your burner doesn't have "Buffer Underrun Protection". In other words, if something interferes with the computer sending data to the CD burner, the CD burner runs out of data and stops burning. CDs with Buffer Underrun Protection actually stop burning and remember where they were and resume burning when the buffer fills back up.
