    Installing WMA codec on x64

I'm having trouble installing the WMA 9.1 codec under Windows XP x64. The installer says that it's only compatible with 32 bit operating systems.

    Is there anyway around this?

You possibly might not require the system files (but do not quote me on that).

What version of WMP (windows media player) is included with XP 64-bit? If its WMP 10, you don't need the system codecs. If it is WMP 9, you need the system codecs. Mabye Microsoft has something about this? It sounds like it merits investigating.

x64 has WMP10 built in, but ... I made a booboo -- I meant to have posted in the dMC forum, dunno why I posted here, as I'm sure I was in the right forum to begin with...

Anyway, problem still exists, if post can be moved, that be cool - might make me look a little less like the idiot that I am

The bit it falls over on is wmfdist95.exe if that's any help.

Send an email to microsoft to see if they have a 64 bit version of that package...

Moved to dMC Support. Don't worry about posting in the wrong section, it happens often.

Have you tried converting with dMC after you install the dMC codec, never mind the "wmfdist95.exe" part? That part is just the system files, you should be able to conver to/from WMA without them, though I am not totally sure on this part.

If I try converting to WMA, I get "The CODEC required to compress [File] could not be opened."

However, nearly following Spoon's advice (I spent ages searching Microsoft's website, rather than waiting for hell to freeze over and recieve a reply), I've found the 64-bit encoder.

Seems to install a load on unnecessary gubbins, but at least it works.

Note that is only the WMA 9 Encoder, NOT the WMA 9.1 Encoder. They don't seem to have a 64-bit version for the 9.1 Encoder.

That's confusing. With a quick Google, it looks like 9.1 came out in 2004, but this file is dated November 2005. I'm assuming it's Microsoft messing about with version numbers, and that x32 version 9.1 = x64 version 9.

So that leads to two questions. Firstly, how can I tell what version a file is encoded with? And secondly, for a regular stereo audio track, does it make any difference?

For a normal audio track, I don't believe there is a big difference between WMA 9.1 and older versions.

As for the version numbers, you would have to ask Microsoft about that. However, I don't believe this is true as there is also a x64 WMA 9.5 (aka 9.1) SDK available for download.

Edit: also, just out of my curiosity, what is your opinion of XP x64?

I forgot to mention that the release date of the 9.5 SDK is the same as the 9 encoder. I think I'm going to stick with the version I've got, I run a couple of test files, and everything sounds okay.

As for x64, visually there's no difference between it and regular XP Pro. It does feel a little faster and more stable, but I have no hard facts to back that up. System level programs like anti-virus and firewalls are thin on the ground at the moment, but that will hopefully change when Vista 64 comes out. If you have a 64 bit processor, there's a 120 day trial available from Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/6...cts/trial.mspx
