I had dbPowerAmp music converter version 9 on my computer, and downloaded some files with .ram extensions. I installed the old realplayer codec, and began converting to .wav files. Seven files converted successfully to .wav, then it just stopped working: the dbPowerAmp window said "converting" and the time counter operated, but nothing appeared in the target folder.
So, I uninstalled dbPAmp and the codec, and I downloaded and installed version 11.5. I installed the Direct Show codec and the Real Alternative files, nd I configured Direct Show to include .ra, .rm and .ram (each entered on a separate line), then I ran dbPAmp configuration, and those entries appeared. I rebooted. Then, when I tried to convert the .ram files, I got a popup with the following error code: "The CODEC required to decompress 'F:\Documents and Settings\Rick\Desktop\Trio7528blueclarinet1.ram' could not be opened.
DirectShow filter for '.ram' not installed, or Audio File Corrupt." I know that the audio file is not corrupt, because it plays, and I double checked the installation of the realplayer codec, but I still get this message. I tried uninstalling version 11.5 and Direct Show, and reinstalling version 9 and the old real-time codec, but the result is a .wav file only 1 kb in size that won't play any music.
I have read on this forum that the .ram extension is really a metafile that points to the actual .ra file on the web, and when I opened one of them in notepad it contained the line: "pnm://ra1.technoir.net/technoir/jazz/songs/dodds/blueclarinet1.ra". Unfortunately, my browser doesn't recognize "pnm:", so that did me no good.
I would be tempted after all that to conclude that dbPAmp simply doesn't work with .ram metafiles, and that my only option is to record the music from my soundcard while the file plays. But I can't conclude that because it actually did convert 7 .ram files to .wav when I started out! This is really a mystery to me, and I have spent a lot (too much) time getting more and more frustrated over this. I would sure appreciate it if someone could tell me how to configure this so that dbAmp would resume converting the .ram files, as it did in the beginning.
