    cant see any RA

    can not convert RA files,
Followed setup, exactly, but no RA files seen.
Even installed RA encoding, which converts mp3 to RA, but new RA file still not seen.

You want to convert to Real Media or from Real Media?

You can convert to .rm in fact. If you want you can rename the file to be .ra though, there's no difference.

I also cannot see my real audio files in the open file dialog. I have done the config and have Direct Show (*. ra) etc. in the filetypes list but my ra files do not show.

Can you play these .ra files in Windows Media Player? If not, then apparently these are some files that the DirectShow RealMedia filter cannot play. You can either use Aux Input for these files or use the old real-time RealMedia converter, found in Codec Central

No - can't play them in Media Player. Look, I'm a little bit annoyed about this. I bought the license in good faith for teh express purpose of converting .ra to .mp3, but the procedure seems very complicated if it works at all. I have used Magic Converter, and it works seamlessly. Is it possible to get a refund please?

As other people will tell you, there is a trial period for this product in order to test whether the functionality works correctly for you. The fact you didn't use this to your advantage shows you jumped in too quickly without reading.

There are plenty of posts on the forum already about Real files, I suggest you read some of them in order to find an answer.

And no, I am not affiliated in any way with Illustrate. I'm an avid dBpowerAMP user and have never had any issues with the software that haven't been easily solved.

No, once you download the registered version it is not possible to get a refund. This is stated on the Registration page.

If you cannot play these .ra files in WMP, this means one of about three things:
The DirectShow RealMedia splitter is not installed properly
Your .ra file is one of the few that the splitter cannot decode
Your .ra file is a meta-file. See here for details: No, once you download the registered version it is not possible to get a refund. This is stated on the Registration page.

So, you did install RealAlternative and the RealMedia splitter, and you do not have RealPlayer installed, correct?
Can you play any other .ra files in WMP?

Deano - the trial version does not allow .RA to .MP3 conversion - you have to pay for the codec. Or at least that's how I understood it. This is a very complicated bit of software to get your head around. Magic seems much simpler to use. I converted .RA to .MP3 immediately with their trial version - wish I'd given them my cash instead. The only thing that put me off is that I thought I needed Real Alternative rather than Real Player, but now I realise it works with both. I'll stick with Magic.

Ltdata - "So, you did install RealAlternative and the RealMedia splitter, and you do not have RealPlayer installed, correct? Can you play any other .ra files in WMP?"

                  - what the heck is RealMedia splitter?
                  - I have tried with both Real Player and Real Alternative. I prefer to use Real Player because Real Alternative Javascript support is inferior
                  - I have never tried playing .RA in WMP. I assumed they don't play. Will try (I'm on a different PC now)

Why does it all have to be so complicated?

You can decode Real Audio using the DirectShow method for free, it is not tied to anything that costs money. Yes, to encode to mp3 you need either a valid PowerPack trial or a registered version.

I still don't understand why I cant see the .ra files in the open file dialog. Its not that Direct Show can if play them - it just doesn't see them! Both WMP and Magic see them and open them so it must be some buy in dB Power. Since I have paid I'm determined to figure this out!

                            Re: cant see any RA

                            Did you follow these instructions:
Real Audio: Download 'Real Alternative' from http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/1054136293/1 (or search in Google for Real Alternative) add .ra .rpm .rm .ram .rmvb all on separate lines to Configure DirectShow Decoder
                            ?

You need RealAlternative because it gives you a DirectShow decoder for all Real Media files. This allows both WMP to play the files and dMC to decode them, if the steps above are followed.

I had Real Alternative, but found that it doesn't have the Javascript support of Real Player, so I reinstalled Real Player. I did the .ra .rpm .rm .ram .rmvb configure. What I don't understand is that the file open dialog doesn't show .ra files even though I select "Direct Show (*.ra)" in the filter. Why can't it see them?
