    Problems with .m4a downloads

    Hi all:

I recently began acquiring music in large quanities, and because the evil Apple Corp has taken over the music industry, most of the new files I download are in .m4a format. Now, there is an interesting phenomenon associated with these files and these files only, and that is that some of the files have the following characteristics: 1) they are unreadable by any media player other than VLC media player; 2) they are not recognized as files in DBPoweramp converter; and 3) windows cannot show their properties. The files with these characteristics are usually the first track in a series of tracks converted from .m4p. For instance, the first movement in a symphony will be unreadable by anything other than VLC, but the rest will be fine. I would chalk it up to DRM and move on, but the fact that VLC can read them means that it is possible to analyze the files, which means it is also possibel to convert them, which is what I really want to do. I can't imagine I'm the only one having this problem. Any help would be appreciated. Before you ask, yes I'm sure the files are .m4a and not .m4p.

Also, before you ask: yes I do have the proper codec, but that wouldn't explain the other weird things, like ???no properties???

      Re: Problems with .m4a downloads

When you say you began acquiring songs, are you referring to the iTunes Music Store? If so, how did you unprotected these files? If your using iTunes 6 to purchase songs, there aren't any methods of removing the protection that I am aware of other than recording the song as you play it.

Also, I don't believe Windows will show properties for anything that isn't supported by Windows Media Player which includes m4a. dBpowerAMP does add columns to Windows that show this information, but only if dMC can read it.
