How to Convert MIDI or any "live" music to .mp3, .wav, etc...

HOW TO RECORD AUXILIARY MUSIC SOURCES USING dMC's Auxiliary Input Program

    1. Install the latest version of dBpowerAMP Music Converter (http://www.dbpowerAMP.com).
    * Music Converter has these codecs pre-installed: .mp3 (Lame), .mp3 (Blade) & .wav.

    2. Install dMC Auxiliary Input (http://www.dbpowerAMP.com).

    3. * This step is OPTIONAL (read Step 10 below):
Install .ape (Monkey's Audio) codec for lossless recordings (no degradation of sound).

    4. Create a folder on your PC to save recorded music to (ex. C:\RecordedMusic).

    5. First you have to get the audio from your Receiver, LP or Cassette into your PC. Use a cable (a 1/8" Stereo Jack Male-to-Male cable) connecting the HeadPhones Jack on your Receiver, LP or Cassete Player to the "Line-In" on your sound card.

    6. Start the dMC Auxiliary Input program (Start >> Programs >> dBpowerAMP Music Converter >> dMC Auxiliary Input).

    7. Tell "Auxiliary Input" which Sound Port you are recording from (Line-in). Click the "Options" icon at the top-left of the screen. In the "Input Source" section, click "Select" & Windows will display all the items it can record from. Put a "check" in select under the item to be recorded from, which will be "Line-In". While in Options, check "Auto Start" & "Auto End", if you want to let dMC try to determine when the tracks Start & End automatically, otherwise leave these options unchecked. Set "Quality" to 44.1 KHz (CD Quality). All the other options can be ignored for now. Click Ok.

    8. Set the recording volume. Click "Test Recording Volume" at the top left of the screen. Start the Receiver, LP or Cassete player to play one of the tracks.
As the music plays, the VU Meter line should jump to the left & right (if not check your cable). Adjust the volume level on the VU meter so its maximum just reaches the "Optimal" mark, this can be done by clicking on the Red volume scale (to the right of the horn) & dragging it to the left or right to adjust the Record (input) volume. This will set the recording volume. Ideally, set the recording volume scale to full (all the way to the right), then reduce the volume on the Receiver, LP or Cassete player (I set my cassette player volume to "2" during the "Test Recording Volume" to reach the "Optimal" mark). Wait for the audio track to reach it's normal volume (its highest peak) - do not let the highest peak go beyond the "Optimal" mark. It's no good setting the volume level on a quiet part of the track (its lowest peak). When you are satisfied, click "End Test".

    9. Set the number of song tracks to record at "Record xxx Tracks" at the top left of the screen.

    10. Now, you can input the Artist/Album/Year/Category & name each song before you begin recording. dMC is able to set ID Tag information for .mp3 files (not for Wave files). It is worth your effort to enter as much information before recording NOW, so you do not have to rename & detail each file individually later. You can give each track the correct title (select Track 1 & press F2 to rename) or right-click the first track, type in name, then press Enter to rename each remaining track. Include the artist information at the top-right of the screen.

    11. Next, you must choose the recording format to record to, by clicking the small menu button (down Arrow) next to "Record". In the "Record To" section, choose your choice of .ape (Monkey's Audio), .mp3 (Lame), .mp3 (Blade) or .wav. Settings for the compression format can be changed (such as bitrate) by selecting "Compression Settings" in the same menu.

NOTE: The first choice is the .ape (Monkey's Audio) compression, along with the following settings for the highest CD-quality recordings without any degradation (a larger file):
    .ape (Monkey's Audio) Compression Settings:
Click the small menu button (down Arrow) next to "Record".
Under "Record To", choose "Monkey's Audio".
Click the small menu button (down Arrow) again.
    Click "Compression Settings".
Under "Compression Settings", set "Compression" to "Normal". Click OK.

Second choice is the .mp3 (Lame) compression, along with the following settings for the highest CD-quality recordings with little degradation (a smaller file):
    .mp3 (Lame) Compression Settings:
Click the small menu button (down Arrow) next to "Record".
Under "Record To", choose "mp3 (Lame)".
Click the small menu button (down Arrow) again.
    Click "Compression Settings".
Set Bit Rate: 320Kbps Channels: Joint Stereo Frequency: 44100
Click the "Advanced Options" button; Under "Preset", set "Quality" to "High". Click OK.
Under the "Lame" icon, slide the bar all the way to the right. Click OK.

Third choice is .wav (Wave) compression, for high quality CD-quality recordings with no degradation (a huge file).
    .wav (Wave) Compression Settings:
Click the small menu button (down Arrow) next to "Record".
    Under "Record To", choose "Wave".

    12. Click the small menu button (down Arrow) next to "Record" button on the top-left of the screen. Next, click "Record (with Options)". Then check the "To CD Quality" Button. Then under "Output to", check the "Folder" option, then click the "Browse" button to select the folder on your PC you wish to save the recorded music to (Step 4 above). When you have found the folder, click it once, then click "OK". You are now back at the previous window, where your folder will be listed.

    13. When you are ready to record, click the "Convert" button to begin recording. Only when dMC says it's "Waiting To Record", should you begin playing the Receiver, LP or Cassette. After you have started playing the song, IMMEDIATELY press the "Record" button to begin recording. Press the "Record" button again to Stop recording, ONLY if you did NOT check "Auto Start" & "Auto End" (Step 7 above).

Good, but note that Auxiliary Input comes with the Converter now.

Also, mp3 (Blade) is no longer included by default.

It is better to record directly to WAV, as it is lossless and uncompressed. WAV files having no tags is not a factor, since there are no tags to carry over. Once the file is properly recorded, convert to your desired format and add tags.
