Poor quality on Audible file conversions

I can convert audible files, but the mp3 file sounds worse than audibles. First used Lame, then tried Blade.

Even if you click "Normalize" it peeks out/distorts.

The original audible file, even when downloaded at it's best quality, still isn't good quality - them trying to lessen file size & band width.

But the converted one can't even reproduce that. Sigh.
    Anyone know of a solution?

    Thanks

Try converting to wave, keep the frequency the same during any conversion.
