Unable to convert mp4 to mp3

I installed a couple of codecs and DBampower can't seem to open the original mp4 file.

    What am I doing wrong?

Could it be that the mp4 file is protected?

Moved to dMC Support. Have you installed the mp4/m4a codec that is the first one listed on the mp4/m4a page in Codec Central? You need that codec to decode mp4/m4a files, I believe.

Where did this file come from?

This is the message I receive in the window while trying to convert -

The file 'C:\Converted Music\shayne ward - No Promises.mp4' could not be opened.

It looks like it might well be protected. Where did you get that file from? Was it bought from something like iTunes?

Can you play it on that same computer in any player?

Yes it can be played on my Nero media player only, but that is because the file type for mp4 does not appear on Windows Media Player 9 series

I am sure it something to do with updating Nero to version 5, but I have Nero 6, so I don't understand. That was the message that came up after installing the codec.

OK, so on the same pc, correct?

Can dAP play it? Probably not.

Are you signed is as admin?

            Did you reboot?

Which mp4 codec did you install for dB from Codec Central?

Is this file downloaded from someplace?

              Yes on the same PC

I never use DAP to play music

I never sign in as admin.

              I did not reboot

I installed them all after the first one failed to open the mp4 file

It was downloaded from the internet

By the way a message appeared from the DAP site saying someting about needing Nero 5 installed, but I have Nero 6, so I am slightly confused.

I just installed them as you would install any file, I am not sure what you mean by as admin?

This is the message that appeared when I installed the first codec -

Requires registered Nero v5 or newer (currently incompatible with Nero 7) . Install 'm4a, mp4 Codec' to write ID Tags.

The thing is I have Nero 6

Re: Unable to convert mp4 to mp3

And Nero v6 is newer than Nero v5, correct?

I mean did you install the programs when you were in an account with Administrator rights, or as a limited/power user?

And did you install the top codec listed on this page: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central-mp4.htm ? The nero codec only ENCODES files, it does not decode. You need the top codec on the aforementioned page to decode .mp4 files.

Yes, I would have thought that it's newer.

So the needed files are the ones that are sized at 452 KB do you need anymore from that page to install? apart from the first one?

I am not sure about the Administrator rights, or as a limited/power user

I don't think that it is a protection problem, as the original mp4 file could be played using my Neromedia player.

Yes, that is the right file.

What version of Windows are you using? If your using Windows 2000 or XP, open up the Control panel, click onto "User Accounts" and see if it says "Computer administrator" or "Limited user" or "Power User" under your account name. You have to be in an administrator account when you install dMC and any codecs.

If your using Windows ME or 98, you don't need to worry about that, except to make sure you installed the updates that are needed for Win98.

                          I have Windows 98 S.E

So do I need anymore updates apart from the one sized at 452 KB the very first codec?

Actually I just put my system back using ghost to how it was before I installed all those codecs, I then installed a different MP4 file, I then right clicked it and chose to convert it to MP3, and it worked, so that first file I had problems opening must have been recognised by DAP as being protected, that's why it would not open it.

This isn't an immediate solution to your problem, but I would highly recommend that you upgrade your operating system. There are some slang abbrievations for "S.E.", but I would prefer not to list them here.
