Re: need help
You do not indicate what you have tried or what problems you have run into.
To convert your RealAudio files to any other format you will need one of the RealAudio decoder codecs thay you will find at Codec Central (see tabbed link above).
To create mp3 lame files with dMC (dBpowerAMP Music Converter) you need either an active trial version of the Power Pack (which contains the .mp3 lame encoder) or a registered version of the Power Pack.
The 2 real audio decoder codecs function quite differently and each requires that other components also be installed. The older codec requires that you have RealPlayer version 8 installed. This codec is converts only in real time (the time it would take to listen to the file) and does not show progress of the conversion until after the conversion is completed. This codec is simpler to install than the other codec.
The newer RealAudio decoder codec uses the DirectShow Decoder and requires RealAlternative and it requires that RealAlternative be designated as your default player for RealAudio files. You then have to configure the DirectShow Decoder codec to recognize and play Real Alternative files. This codec is harder to install but works much quicker than the older codec. This newer codec can run into problems if you keep RealPlayer installed so you should remove RealPlayer if you use the newer codec.
While each codec can convert many/most RealAudio files, there do appear to be some RealAudio files that can be read by either one or the other of these codecs but not by both. I have not seen any information that would allow you to predict whether a given RealAudio file can be read and converted and by which decoder, so this appears to be a hit-or-miss proposition.
Further, there appear to be some RealAudio files that are copy-protected. These are generally downloads from pay for download sites. Such files can perhaps be recorded as you play them through your sound card using dMC Auxilary Input but they canot be converted through regular means.
You should also be aware that these 2 RealAudio Decoders can interfere with one another so you should only have one of these installed in dMC at any time.
I have been assuming you have not installed either RealAudio decoder codec and in this case you should go ahead and do so. If you run into any difficulties, please let us know. Be sure to tell us which RealAudio decoder you are attempting to install/use and be specific about the problem(s) you have encountered. Also, confirm whether the decoder is correctly installed by checking your list of installed decoders in dMC Configuration (Start>All Programs>dBpowerAMP Music Converter> Configuration> dBpowerAMP Music Configuration). With the newe codec you should see your RealAudio file extensions listed on the line for DirectShow Decoder while the older codec will be on a line for RealAudio Decoder. Be sure to tell us whether dMC shows your RealAudio decoder as being installed or not.
It is also possible to have your decoder correctly installed but to run into other types of conversion problems. If this is where you are at, you need to let us know which decoder you are using, whether you have tried using the other decoder, and what problems you have run into.
Hope this helps get you started.
Best wishes,
Bill
