    Codec question

    Hello all.

I have converted most of my CDs to Flac files with Flac codec 4.2. When I upgraded my main computer, I installed Flac codec 5.3. Do I have any compatibility or performance issues? Should I recode my older files?

    Many thanks.

    Re: Codec question

The only way to know is to visit the main flac site and have a look at the codec change log (I suspect there has been minor compression changes).

      Re: Codec question

      Thanks very much, Spoon.

I had a look at the Flac site, and the only changelog I can find makes no reference to codec releases, only Flac 1.1.1 and Flac 1.1.2: http://flac.sourceforge.net/changelog.html

Am I looking in the right place for information about Flac codecs 4.2 and 5.3?

      Thanks again.

        Re: Codec question

The 4.2 and 5.3 numbers reference numbers specific to dMC. According to the FLAC codec page (http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central-flac.htm), FLAC 5.3 uses FLAC 1.1.2.

Thanks, yet again, Lt. Data. That's very helpful. Do I have any compatibility or performance issues? Should I recode my older files?

          Many thanks.

            Re: Codec question

Look for compatability changes between FLAC 1.1.0 and FLAC 1.1.1. FLAC 4.x is based on 1.1.0, FLAC 5.x is based on 1.1.1.

If they treated FLAC like they treat Ogg Vorbis, your files should be just fine. In fact, if the treatment is the same, you FLAC 5.x files should play on any player that played you old files.
