Audio CD Input - No CD Drive Showing

Hi all.

Suddenly, I cannot rip CDs. Audio CD Input asks me to insert a CD - I have.

"Options" shows a blank where the CD drive should be, and a blank list in the drop-down menu.

I have uninstalled, re-installed, updated and installed again, dBpowerAamp, etc, to no avail.

Any thoughts?

Click Advanced and pick "Windows Built-In (Limited)".
Are you using an Administrator account? Did you install dMC from an Administrator account?

Advanced just gives me "CD Communication" and "Command Set", neither of which has "Windows Built-In (Limited)" as an option.

I'm afraid I don't know what that means...

Nope - did all that.

Meanwhile, feeling experimental (reckless?) I tried removing one of the CD drives from the pc using System\Device Manager; the idea was that restarting Windows would bring up a "New Hardware found" process, and reinstall it.

It didn't seem to notice the loss!

I think this might be what you need.

Hi.

The Adaptec aspi checker told me that it’s not properly installed, and that “...one or more components have been replaced with older versions.”

The “Aspi Drive Lister” showed no drives – “Init Returned: No Adaptors”.

Following the first link suggested, to update the aspi layer, led me via a redirect to an Adaptec page that doesn’t seem to have anything on it that is relevant (allowing for my ignorance in this matter, of course...)

The alternate link gave me a direct download that replaced my aspi layer.

After a reboot everything is fine !!!!

Many thanks to all for the interest and patience given.

There is one small glitch in the stew: Audio CD Input now shows both my cd-rom drives OK, but reversed in ident letter (D: for E:, and vice-versa).
An uninstall and reinstall of dBPowerAmp made no difference. But it doesn’t seem to affect the working of the program, as long as I select the drive by name and not letter.

(The drives are correctly identified/labelled in Device Manager, and other programs see them correctly, eg, Cheetah Converter).

In "My Computer", Windows Explorer and all other means of addressing them, they are labelled correctly.

That is the limitation of ASPI, there is no direct mapping between the two, so dBpowerAMP has to to guess.

Well, it goes from bad to worse....

I've done all that - and more (maybe too much).

The situation now is that I don't know where I'm at...

Some things seem to work, but WMP9 won't read CDs - says they are 'digital' and I need to configure things in Tools/Devices... But no drives show!

Burning audio CDs is a waste of time - first three tracks burn, then the rest seem to fail (using what software is to hand Sonic, Nero, Roxio...)

Restored the system and registry to an image made 6 weeks ago - no change.

I'm on the point of doing a reinstall of Windows... And thinking, what the hell, I need a new PC anyway!
