Does anyone know how to convert mp4 files?

I just downloaded a bunch of music from itunes and was trying to format the files so that I could burn them to disc for easier listening. No matter what I do I can't seem to convert these files. I have downloaded the dbpoweramp mp4 converter codec but that doesn't seem to help. I did notice that there is a posibility that these files are protected. Hmmm?? Anyone have an idea how to convert these things?
