Some cd rip attempts locking computer

Problem. I am ripping cds to FLAC. Some cds rip fine. Others lock computer as follows: insert cd, freedb populates fields, hit convert button, drive spins up to 10x, but rip to ram value doesn't increase past 2%, no encoding, time elapsed continues to run, and program won't cancel, windows locks up, computer locks up, won't soft boot, etc., all without any apparent difference between cds that work and those that don't. I would appreciate any insights.

    What OS are you using?
If its Windows XP, check to make sure your drives are not set for PIO Mode. See here: http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showpost...37&postcount=2

Next, it might be overheating. Are you using a desktop of a notebook? If a desktop, take the side of the tower off and blow a floor fan directly into it. If it still crashes, try placing your finger on the CPU heatsink. This is normally located towards the top-back of the computer case and is a large metal piece normally under a fan. If you are nearly burned, you need a new heatsink, fan, or a heatsink-fan combo.

Windows XP (home) on desktop, 2.8 Ghz pentium, 512 Mb ram. Already checked to ensure DMA is set after reading some other threads. Have been browsing tonight and saw your overheating solution for several related problems. Since I'm ripping to FLAC (5) instead of Mp3, I assumed the (relatively) lower compression shouldn't overburden the CPU, But, I'll try it and let you know. Thanks.

Actually, it seems it would be harder to compress FLAC as none of the data is thrown away as it is with mp3.

Re: Some cd rip attempts locking computer

Problem solved (for now). It wasn't overheating. It was pure evil. I uninstalled dmc and tried another FLAC ripper (MARS from Mindawn) and the same thing happened, some cds ripped fine, others locked the computer. I knew then that dmc wasn't the problem, so I uninstalled MARS and reinstalled dmc (Loyalty!). Also, on attempted soft boot of locked computer, I saw message that "Dummy mixer callback window" was not responding. Don't know what it means, but it looked relevant, and fishy. When I reviewed processes running, nothing was eating up processor time, but then I noticed the evil in my midst: "DRM.exe" or something like it. During my reading to catch up on this problem, I learned about Sony/BMG's infamous copy protection rootkit nastiness. Then I noticed that all of the cds that caused the lockup were either Warner Bros, or some subsidiary, OR some smaller label from the 80s that was gobbled up by the conglomerate. Apparently, Sony's DRM virus recognizes every cd in its back catolog, the back catalog of any company bought by Sony or any of its subsidiaries, AND ANY cd purchased through BMG's cd music club (through which I obtained a good chunk of my collection during the 80s and early 90s), and locks up any ripper program accessing the cd. Unfortunately, one of the first cds I attempted to rip after downloading dmc was the ONE cd out of 600 in my collection that happens to be harboring the malware. But, my anti-virus program spotted it, and said it took care of it, so I thought nothing more of it. Apparently, the anti-virus software merely made the program visible or somehow disabled the vulnerability hole caused by the program, but did not uninstall it. I ran Sony's latest uninstaller (which I understand now could cause its own problems) and now, everything works fine. I can now rip cds that previously locked the computer. So, as a ripping novice, I guessed I have been baptized by fire. Sony.....Wasn't it the company that got caught making up movie reviews with a fake reviewer? I'd boycott them, but they own too much of the entertainment world. My question now is: am I out of the woods? Is Sony's latest uninstaller going to quietly lurk in my computer, waiting for the day when vigilance wanes, and evil once more darkens the land? Also, not to change the subject, but how do I rip a DualDisc?

Well, at the moment the only way to rip the DVD side of a DualDisc is to use Auxiliary Input to record the song as it is played.

And I'm sorry to hear about you having the Sony Rootkit. The only way to be entirely sure you are rid of the rootkit is to reinstall Windows. However, if you can rip successfully now, you should be fine.

This is something for us to keep in mind in the future...
Also, you can get the CD that had the rootkit replaced with a clean CD. Google "XCP Exchange" and you should get the needed result.

Already sending off for the replacement. Sony is also offering Mp3 files in addition to a clean cd. I wonder what's hiding in them? The link is http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp. They also have a list of all affected (infected!) cds.....quite an eclectic list. Thanks for listening, Lt.Data. I am impressed by the enthusiasm and genuine concern exhibited by all of the volunteers in this support forum. It's better than most paid support I've seen anywhere else.
