The CODEC required to compress could not be opened.

I'm having a problem with a .wma file.

Here is the info on the .wma

    Codec Windows Media Audio 9.1
    Compression 128 kbps, 44kHz, stereo 1-pass
    Bitrate 128
    Contains Audio

When I try to convert to .mp3, I get this message...

The CODEC required to compress '(file).mp3' could not be opened.

I have already tried going to a .wav and get the same result when trying to go to mp3.

Do you have the registered version of dBpowerAMP Music Converter or an unexpired trial version? You need that in order to convert anything to mp3 due to pattent requirements on the mp3 format.

      Split from a pre-existing thread.

As Christina said, it sounds like your PowerPack is expired. You can check the status of this in dMC Configuration (Start --> Programs --> dBpowerAMP Music Converter --> Configuration --> dMC Configuration).

If you do have either a registered version of dBpowerAMP Music Converter or an unexpired trial version, what settings are you using for the mp3 file you are trying to create?

Im trying to convert .mp3 that is currently at a 98KB size, with a frequency of 41000 to .mp3, frequency 22050, and 24KB size. I have tried on Stereo and Joint Stereo, and still get the same error.

          Thank you for your input.

Re: The CODEC required to compress could not be opened.

Do you mean that the file size is 98 kb or that the bitrate is 98 kbs (kb per second)?
If the file size is 98 kb, what is its bitrate and what is the playing time for the track?

Do you have Professional Frequency Conversion enabled? This is set in dMC Configuration under the Options tab there (Start>All Programs>dBpowerAMP Music Converter>Configuration>dBpowerAMP Music Converter Configuration). This option is useful at times when you sre converting from one frequency to a different frequency.

You might also check to see if you can convert from mp3 to wave and wave to mp3 at the settings you want.

I'll do some fooling around to see if I can replicate your problem and see if I can identify a solution.

            Best wishes,
            Bill

Convert that file to a WAV file with a frequency of 44100Hz, then a WAV of 22050Hz then a mp3 of 22050Hz. Changing the file type and the frequency normally doesn't work directly.

The file size is 98kb's. The file is a radio show, its about 3 and a half hours long... Ive done this plenty of times before, I duno why Im getting this message now.

                Heres what it looks like.

                  Olavirus-
Your primary problem would appear to be that you do not have an mp3 encoder (this requires either an active trial version of Power Pack or a registered version of Power Pack. You had the trial version and it expired. You can read and convert mp3 files but you cannot create mp3 files-even when you start with an mp3 file as you are doing here.

BTW Are you the same or different from the user who started this thread? No problem either way, just wondering.

                  Best wishes,
                  Bill

Ok, so basically Im no longer able to convert mp3's to smaller or of any other size, but I still can covert files that I rip to my cpu?

                    Unless I register my version.

                    Thank you for your response.

You can rip files but not to mp3.
You can convert files but not to mp3.
If you have mp3 files, you can convert them to a different format. There may be some isolated situations in which you can use them as is (perhaps in burning an mp3 disk without altering the files using dB CD Writer or transferring to a portable device without altering them using Sveta). I do not know (but I am much more doubtful on this) whether you could add DSP effects to your mp3 files without altering the file in any other way.

                      Best wishes,
                      Bill

I don't believe you can add DSP effects to pre-existing mp3 files, since the effect is added to the file and the file is re-encoded to mp3, I assume.

                          nice desktop picture :smile2:

and there is NO way that a 3hr audio file is only 98kb (thats kilo-bits, you probably meant kB kilo-bytes... but it is still impossible for an audio file of that length to be that small)... either you have a 98MB file or you have a playlist file
