    real audio stream

    Hi!

I have a couple of questions about real audio stream and dmc .rm encoding:

I normally convert .mp3s to .rms this way:
    surestream, 44khz, 56k, voice, normalize

What is the difference between surestream and single rate?

If I choose "music" as my audio format, i get files twice the size of mp3s... That's why I choose voice... Any other solution, compromise?

When playing the file on the server, if I move forward (by clicking on the centre of the progress tab) it takes incredibly long time to buffer the file and starts playing from the current minute/second. This problem gets worse if the music files are longer,.... Is there a way to fix this with encoding? Does server speed play any role here? 'Cause I saw .ra streams that enable you to jump through a file as if it were on your local hard-drive. I just wanna jump to 3rd minute without having to wait 2 minutes Is it a server issue?

    Thanks for the answers!

    Hi Gregor,

Use Surestream if you're using Real Server to serve your streams
on the internet. The file then contains different bitrates which are
picked-out by the Real Server software and delivered to the client
    depending on their connection speed.

Single rate is beter if you just want to put some Real Audio files
    on your webpage.

The scanning will always be dependant on how quick the player
can get to the requested bit of audio. I believe that if you're
playing from a webserver then you need to load the whole file
in and the bigger the file the longer the wait. Using Real Server
should work better for this kind of application, then the client
sends a request to the server software for a particular part of the
    file as an audio stream.

As for filesize, Surestream creates very big files because it contains
different bitrates all in one file. For Single-rate it should just be
a matter of experimenting with bitrates, sample rates and quality
    (music, voice, stereo music).

    Hope this helps,
    Daren.

does anybody here have extended experiences with the real encoding? I am facing system failures here on WinNT4.0 and a Win98SE systems.
Does anybody successfully use dMC for regular real encoding??
