    cannot convert ac3 to wav

I'm attempting to convert an ac3 file to wav. I've download an ac codec from codec central, and edited the text file as instructed. ac3 is listed in the dropdown menu, but when I make the attempt, I get the following message:

The CODEC required to decompress 'H:\Data Files\Dark.ac3' could not be opened.
DirectShow filter for '.ac3' not installed, or Audio File Corrupt.

I'm reasonably sure the file is not corrupt. I've tried using any number of them.

    I'm an ignorant newbie.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks,

    Dave O

Did you follow the entirety of the instructions here: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central-directshow.htm
    including downloading the AC3 filter?

Can you play your .ac3 file in Window Media Player? You should if you have the AC3Filter correctly installed.

Re: cannot convert ac3 to wav

Windows Media Player won't play the file. I'm at a loss. The software indicates that the codec is installed. I'm uninstalled and reinstalled everything, and edited the text file, adding .ac3 per the instructions.

          I must be missing something.

Thanks for any help you can offer,

          Dave O.

Did you install the AC3Filter program? Note I do NOT mean the dMC codec, but the separate program called AC3Filter.

No. Should I? How would I configure it?

Re: cannot convert ac3 to wav

The DirectShow Decoder page says this:
AC3: Download from http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/ [Direct Download] add .ac3 to Configure DirectShow Decoder
Here is the direct download link: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/a...b.exe?download

As for how to configure it, I have no idea as I have never used it. Just install it and mabye that will be enough, but someone else will have to help you if you have problems with it.

Re: cannot convert ac3 to wav

when you install ac3filter it will put a config shortcut in your start menu, and in the control pannel

you can also configure it while playing an ac3 file with WMP6.4 (mplayer2.exe)
