CD ripper sits on first track on some cds

Apologies if this has already been dealt with, but am new here and can't find an answer.
Am trying to rip original audio CDS to hard drive.
Most CDS go through perfectly fine.
But too many show titles/cover art etc and when I click on rip, nothing happens for 5 seconds, then there is a sort of 'rrr' from the CD/DVD player and then nothing, five seconds later, another 'rrr' and I can leave it like this for as long as I want, but the CD simply won't rip- I have to cancel and physically eject the CD. Same CD won't rip on EAC ripper, nor Windows Legacy Ripper, but plays fine on CD player on stereo, but does not play via dbpower.

This was the case for just about all the Radiohead albums, but not the Radiohead CD singles.

    Any suggestions please?

Okay - please, what external CD drive would you recommend?

And why is it intermittent? I can rip five CDs in a row and then the next 2 or 3 just hang.

        Spoon, thanks for your suggestion.
I pulled my old apple superdrive out of the attic and you are right - the ripper is now faster and ripping all the cds.

        Thanks once again!
