Yes, this is desirable. You want you player software to read your audio files and pass the data directly to the DAC, bypassing the inferior audio path of the macbook.

I'm a Windows user and use foobar2000, WASAPI driver and my separate dac for this purpose. I am not familiar with current Apple audio player/software/dac compatibility.
