CD Ripper not finding disc and retrieving metadata

On an iMac running OSX 10.13.6 CD Ripper V17.7 fails in looking up CD and associated metadata and stalls. When I press refresh, CD Ripper reverts to the Lookup Disc window. iTunes on the very same iMac looks up CDs and metadata (w/o album art) in a few seconds. What is the issue here? Did I invest in the OSX version in vain?
