Set cd ripper to rip to Apple Lossless; Rips came out in .M4a

I've been ripping my cds in Apple Lossless -or so I thought, since I set the cd ripper accordingly.
What I just found out was that all my rips came out in the lossy format of .M4a.
And so now, of course these lossy rips can not be converted to the format I wanted which was lossless.

How could this be?
That dBpoweramp misled me in this way.

Further:
Is there any way I can use dBpoweramp to rip to Apple Lossless?
If so, what do I have to do?

m4a is a container format and can store lossy and lossless codecs.

Please ignore the above post / question.
It seems that I was misinformed by someone at Apple who, mistakenly told me that my music transferred to iTunes were done in the .M4a codec. Working with another Apple support staff I now see that dBpoweramp did right by me. All my rips were done in Apple Lossless... as I had supposed.

I want to thank you for the information you provided. M4a is a container format, you say, which can store either lossy and lossless files.
This makes sense of what the second Apple support person I spoke to was trying to tell me... which until I read your explanation, I didn't quite get.
