2 Questions about CD Ripper - De-emphasis ticked option and Cross-pressing verif.

Hi Spoon and team,

I have two questions:

Question 1

Option:
[X] Apply De-emphasis to CD tracks marked with Pre-emphasis.

Regarding this setting, I had the "Track Technical" column hidden for a while (because it is the default layout). This is a three-fold question:

a) Will this column show up out of nowhere when you insert a CD with Pre-Emphasis flag on the tracks?

b) If there is any action here that CD Ripper takes, it will be registered in the .log file, thus, if any CD was de-emphasized, then the log will tell me it was, otherwise it won't say a thing, is that correct? None of my CDs had a alert about de-emphasis. Reason I ask is because I don't think I have any CD like that (Low-Life was one of the, and Please from Pet Shop Boys too) and I am just a little cautious about settings that change audio.

c) In the process of de-emphasizing the CD, it will modify the audio. Even going that route, will it still return an accurate rip based on the de-emphasized version of the CD?

I still think some vinyl rips are better than this de-emphasis process -- it usually removes treble much more than it is desired.

Question 2

Option:
[X] Cross-pressing verification.

Regard this setting, I noticed that if ONE track gets a second PASS (Pass 2), say, the only track on the CD, this track will not register an entry for a cross-pressing verification, whereas other tracks that do get a Pass 1 Accurate, will return a cross-pressing verification. Example:

As you can see above, I did not paste all tracks, but track 02 on this CD is AccurateRip - and has a CRCv2 and CRCv1 check. Tracks 01, 03 to 10 are also registering to the log another two entries for a -438 pressing offset, CRCv2 and CRCv1. The track 02 was the only one that got two passes.

And I have been seeing this behaviour when it goes 2 passes. Is there any explanation as to way it won't log a cross-pressing verification when it has to go through a second pass?

I asked this a while back and the log file will reflect any de-emphasis - see quote from Spoon below.

HD CD is easy, the tracks will be saved as 24 bit. De-emphasis, a line will be written to the secure ripping log.

The log file will also reflect HDCD - take a look at the extract below from a recent CD I ripped. Minor point but Spoon does need to add a 'new line' before the 'Extraction Log' starts.

As I understood, THIS WILL ONLY SHOW UP if it's detected via TOC. If the CD does contain a extreme brightness and it is said to have Pre-Emphasis and it does not show up in TOC, then you will have to apply the DSP on a CD per CD basis.

Yes, I do not have a pre-emphasis CD to check, but it is worth adding the Track Technical column in CD Ripper and you will see this information pre-rip. Regardless, the log file will still contain the information you need in order to apply post-rip DSPs if you require.

A good tip is to search the root folder that contains all your log files via the operating system search facilities. A search like [Track Technical] will filter out only those logs (and thus rips) where HDCD or pre-emphasis is present. Another search I use is [re-rip frame] to check up on those potentially problematic rips.

By the way, with regards to Question 2 I have not seen this before. In my logs when a pressing offset is used it applies to the entire CD given the whole CD was pressed at a different time or plant. All I can suggest is that the DiscID and associated track does not exist in the AccurateRip database, or has been skipped due to a processing problem - if you really want to check you could re-rip the CD and see what the new log brings. However, the important information here are the AccurateRip CRCs, and given the confidence value is already at 200 you can be guaranteed those ripped tracks are undeniably perfect.

Hmmm... this is weird, to your log, it would seem to me that the Pass 2 would have nothing to do with it. But in my case, it is happening when it get 2 passes. In your case, it would seem that that particular track is not present as ripped with the pressing offset +6, which it would be normal to think of. But in my case, it's like night and day... if I get a second pass, that only track won't register the pressing, I'm gonna do some testing here with two CDs I know they have a second pass.

Update: I posted a new message but it got into the moderation filter. I was able to reproduce the problem. First track got 2 passes, other tracks got 1 pass. The first track missed the cross-pressing entries in the log. Then I noticed that the two passes might be caused by the drive spin up -- so it had to go 2 passes. I was able to get one pass in the log for that message that is in the moderation queue, that had the drive at full speed when ripping. I also did a second test with a spin up for 8 seconds each track - this time around it got one pass and also got the entries for the cross-rips. But the spin-up thing before each track does not mean much. It looks to me that whenever it goes to 2 passes, no matter what, it will fail to register the cross-rip reference. To workaround this second pass, I am ripping a new rip at full speed right after a first rip that had 2 passes.

Ok. Here's some interesting thing.

The pressing is this one.

The behaviour was funny.
The first track got two passes, but the I noticed that the drive was not at full speed. I ended up ripping the track again, before the drive would stop spinning completely, and I got not only 1 pass, but also the records for the other cross-ripping reference:

Notice that the first time around, it didn't record the +251 pressing with 2 passes.

That is strange. Does your drive not support C2, as I see it disabled in the log?

My understanding is you would not get these multiple passes if C2 is enabled as errors would be identified via the C2 error protocol.

Yes, it supports C2. But when I turn this on in DBPA, it can't rip any CD. So I leave this disabled.
In that other program we know of, it works as expected - but in Secure Mode it takes 20 to 30 minutes to rip one CD with Test & Copy.
