I know that the drive guide is no longer maintained but what drives are you folks out there using for maximum results in your ripping?

virtually any drive will work well. That's the beauty of secure ripping with AccurateRip matches. I have 2 or 3 cheap drives, some salvaged from older desktops. Not sure the brands. I find that a CD that is a problem ripping on one drive may rip perfectly from a different drive.
