    Upc tag

How do I include the UPC code from a CD with the name for the artist's folder?

CDRipper >> Naming >> Open the dBpowearamp: CD Ripper naming window (click the set button adjacent to the Naming string text box).

Place the cursor in the Base Location, where you want to add the UPC tag i.e. next to the artist folder. Click the Add Tag button and select UPC from the list. [upc] is then added to the naming string.

        Here's what I did: [IFVALUE]album artist,[album artist],[IFCOMP]Various Artists[][IF!COMP][artist][][],[upc]\[album]\[track] [artist] - [title]

This produced a folder with the artist's name and a "," after it, but didn't include the UPC value.

Perhaps there was no upc value in the metadata, look on the metadata tab. UPC is no available for all discs.

            Hi,

Is the UPC a useful tag to include, please? I have seen it but never utilised it as yet.

            Many thanks,

            Paul

It can be useful. Would it be so to you?

Hi JH, I would never search for a CD using the UPC tag! But perhaps it has other unique uses? Thanks, Paul

Perhaps. Maybe if you lost a CD and wanted to replace it with the exact same version you had, rather than a different release. Other than that, I got nothin'.

If I were you, I wouldn't worry about UPC codes until a use is found for them.

                    JH,

Yes, quite; I would imagine that that is the fundamental purpose of the UPC.

But I was thinking, is such a CODE not something which people often document in MS Excel?

I don't have any idea, but whether they do or not shouldn't impact your decision on the matter. Do you feel that a UPC tag is necessary for you or, at least, useful? If the answer is "No," then there's no reason to concern yourself with it.

                        Paul,

I can honestly say, that before reading this thread, using an UPC Tag, wouldn't have crossed my mind. Knowing my friends and colleagues, they probably have never checked, or indeed know about tags like catalogue number, or even Label, yet alone adding a new tag.

BUT, I can see that an UPC Tag, may be useful; the fact that it was asked about, proves that.

Personally I won't be adding it, but as Jailhouse asked, would it be necessary for you?

                          JH,

In all honesty, I would guess that it would be a complete mission to include all of the UPC tags in one's CD collection! For some people it might be worth it - for whatever reasons.

If I make it past 65 and retire then it might be something I perform to kill time!

                          Cheers,

                          Paul

                            Hi Oggy,

In the event of losing one's copy of a CD, and wanting to replace it with a like for like, then I can appreciate it's use. But other than that, nothing springs to mind? I am not concerned about obtaining the exact same copy should any become misplaced.

There is a thread involving someone using an on-air automation system for a radio station in which the OP asks about UPCs. I imagine they would be used in determining who gets royalties for the airplay.

Paul, you haven't mentioned anything about running a radio station, so I'll go out on a limb and say you have no need at all for the UPC tag. It's no problem if you want to add it anyway, but it seems to me that in your situation it would be nothing more than tag spam. And who needs more spam?
