Rip to connect HD or to QNAP NAS

Im in the process of ripping my CD collection.
I read somewhere that i should rip (using power amp) direct to a connected HD.
Then transfer to the QNAP NAS later

Is there a reason for doing this ?

    Where did you read this?

If you are confident with network administration and have a solid network, I see no reason why you shouldn't rip direct to your NAS.

Personally, I like rip to a local drive, check the rip, perform a couple of post rip tasks and update my documentation. Only when I am totally satisfied with the rip, do I copy it to my network location.

I rip directly to my NAS, and have never had problems.

Re: Rip to connect HD or to QNAP NAS

I typically rip directly to the NAS. The only issues I've had were when the NAS scheduled a chron job, a antivirus scan, while I was ripping. Everything ground to a crawl... I reset the chron job to run at a more odd hour and that problem vanished.

Two things that can mess you up: First your network has to be solid. Wifi is much slower than gigabit Ethernet. Second, most NAS boxes have slower processors than any modern PC (except the Raspberry Pi) and are therefore easy to overload if too many tasks run at the same time.

If I want to do QC on the ripped files, I find it just as easy to do it on the NAS as on the PC. The only annoying part there is how Windows doesn't maintain a permanent index of the contents of the NAS, so searching the NAS slows down while Windows filters/sorts the files.

If I did a lot of post rip QC like Mville does, there would be advantages to keeping newly ripped files in a separate folder until that is finished. A lot less files to look through.

          Thankyou for the replies
I was looking into the task some more and was thinking i should burn a bunch of CDs directly to a local HD ,then double check the burns for metadata error etc.But then i thought i can still alter errors on the NAS ,carnt i ?
I only want to do the job once.
