Mac Version Ripping Errors

I'm testing dbPoweramp on a Mac. I was able to rip a few discs but then came across a couple that no matter what ripping settings I use return an error message with no attempts to secure rip.

The CDs play normally.

To be honest I don't think this product is ready.

At the end of ripping the errors are shown on the error page, click the copy to clipboard button and paste the errors here in the forum.

Hey Waldo,

The CDs play normally.

that doesn't have to mean anything. The CD can be faulty. The playback of Audio CDs can use an error correction, so that you don't hear any problems or errors. If you try to rip a faulty CD accurately, you can run into trouble.

To be honest I don't think this product is ready.

The drive is returning data which is all zeros but not informing the program there is an error. I am fairly confident that your drive is at fault here. What cd drive do you have?

Those file names look god awful and they go above the limit of 255 characters, try renaming them or deleting the info altogheter and ripping the disc as "unknown artist" etc.

Also, which OSX version are you running?

It's an LG GP65NB60. It's been ripping other discs from this recording of the Ring without issue. What I don't understand is why the program doesn't try to re-rip or secure rip even when set to do so.

Because there is another underlying problem here.

Why are you ignoring the advice posted by Spoon and jultsu?

Firstly, do you have another drive you can try?

Secondly, the pathname/filename length exceeds the 255 character limit.

I've got 1000 CDs to rip and I don't have the time to tweek hardware or files to meet dbPoweramp's limitations. Life's too short to have to do this and that to make it work.

It is not a limitation of dBpoweramp Music Converter, rather the Mac OS file system.

The 255 char limitation is also found in Windows' file systems, I remember both OSes having some workarounds for this problem but they break compatibility with most other/older systems. If your queue of 1000 cd's mostly consist of classical music (which usually have really long and complex file names) you should just add a tag to the dBpoweramp naming scheme to limit the maximum character count to the allowed 255. Or just throw the cd's into the bin and put Spotify on. Life's too short to spend it sitting by the computer and popping in a thousand cd's one at a time.

That's why the Mac version isn't ready. The data is collected and formatted by dbPoweramp. If it's a limitation of Mac OS, it should be addressed.

So, you'll need to complain to Apple then and ask them to re-write the HFS Plus file system.

If you could be bothered to read the help pages/forum, you would know that dBpoweramp Music Converter has already addressed the issue with the MAXLENGTH function.

I am completely confused with the attitude shown here, when you clearly need help with the software. I for one, will no longer participate in this thread.

Well, the 255 char limit issue causing this problem was just a guess, and I suppose it will stay forever a mystery if you're not bothered to even try truncating the file names on this one particular cd to see if that fixed the issue you're having.

Although, now that I look at the log more carefully, it seems that your disc numbering tag is the culprit, you shouldn't have the / character inside a file name since that char is reserved for directory separation. Try removing it from the disc tag (or replacing it with \ ) and if it fixes the issue, you can add a rule to the program which will automatically replace / with \ .

Or, now on the third time looking at it, does your folder name end with "Disc 1" and song name start with the song number? If so, then it has to be the 255 limit problem. For example, the song name "06 Maria Graf-Herta Wilfert-Gerda Lammers-Jean Watson-Ramo&*769;n Vinay-Astrid Varnay-Elisabeth Schartel-Hilde Scheppan-Bayreuth Festival Orchestra-Georgine von Milinkovic-Joseph Keilberth-Maria von Ilosvay-Hans Hotter-Jos. Aus dem Wald trieb es mich fort.flac" has 260 characters so it does not comply with the standard, but the song name has originally been only 254 characters which is compliant. The part "o&*769;" is caused by an character encoding difference between the original submitter and you and it should just read one single character, in this case "ó"

Again, this is not a problem of dBamp, this one goes way way way back in time, before people invented Unicode and adopted it as the standard we had a gazillion different character maps, all with different ways of encoding the special characters not found on the typical US layout keyboard and when you didn't use the same encoding in your web browser as the other person who had written something there, it resulted in something like this..
