Ripping Copied CD's

I have completed ripping my cd library consisting of thousands of cd's with only a handful of errors and problems. I ripped to codecs wav for long term preservation, flac 5 for high fidelity pc music server for home system and ACC for mobile devices and portability. I pretty much followed Spoons set-up recommendations. By the way Mr. Spoon, your product kicks ass. I am now starting on a handful of copied cd's that I have obtained over the years and having less luck. Copies were by copy disk function of a PC mostly - many of them 15 years ago or so. I am getting errors when I rip them. Disks that I know are in AccurateRip are coming out with errors on every track. At bottom of this post is an example. Questions:

Am I assuming too much thinking I can rip a copied cd as successfully as an original? Perhaps there is a fundamental issue at work here I am ignorant about.
Is there a different set-up I can use to maximize the effectiveness of the rip for copies?
Are the errors something that will still allow use of the music files? Is there a way to tell?
How can I determine if a given error is serious enough to cause problems and audible differences in playback?
I have searched this site for more detailed information on errors and ripping results but have not found it - if there is such a thing, please point me to it.

I have successfully ripped CD-R copies of about a dozen CDs (which I own on vinyl), and have at the worst achieved all Secure rips, the odd mostly AccurateRip with a couple of Secures, and also all AccurateRip. I rightly or wrongly, put this down to the copying software, or maybe how they cope with pressing offset.

CD-Rs over time deteriorate, so maybe that is what has occurred in your case to get so many errors.

I would suggest you clean the CD-R with warm, sopey water from the centre outwards in radial lines, and dry with non-abrasive tissue.

Firstly then try again in the same drive, and secondly use another CD drive. The performance of drives with CD-R s, particularly marked ones varies massively..

If this fails, you can buy Big Ones for about £1.50, delivered these days!

Re: Ripping Copied CD's

My favourite band made some bespoke CD-R for fans a few years ago, and the odd one is now not reading / playing reliably. A CD-R is not a reliable backup (as some folks have found the hard way, a few years down the line) sometimes the ink from the printer, or pen can cause problems. Some makes of blanks were far better quality than others and are still functioning well.

As an aside, I had some files on a CD-R that I needed and the disc wouldn't read in my drive - a colleague managed to copy the CD-R and the day was saved. Lesson learnt!!
