Better alternative than iTunes?

I am engaged in a project to rip my CD collection to iTunes & then to sync the iTunes music library with an iPod classic (actually, 3 of them, possibly 4, each 160 gig). The ripping started off well. I ripped maybe 50 albums (single- & multi-disc) using Apple Lossless. All the rips were "Accurate". The music files were inserted into the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder & automatically moved to the iTunes library. Then iTunes started getting buggy, perhaps after an update. I won't go into all the ugly details, except that it has been 2 or 3 weeks of growing frustration, Apple Support has been unable to resolve the situation, & I am to the point where I am looking for an alternative. Can anyone suggest one?

is only the automatic import from the folder "Automatically Add to iTunes" buggy, or is the manual import from any folder buggy too?
