Artist Name Tagging Question

If I am ripping a CD by "Fred Smith" and want my playback software to list this under S, I need to tag this as "Smith, Fred". What is the proper way to tag something like "Fred Smith & Friends" or "The Fred Smith Family Band" and still have them listed under S?

As long as your playback software supports them, use sort tags.

e.g. if Artist (or Album Artist) = Fred Smith, then Artist Sort (or Album Artist Sort) = Smith, Fred.
