CD Ripper could imagine how many more disks are coming, because the total number of discs should / could be in the meta data, but still assuming your feeding the CDs in the right order into CD Ripper. What CD Ripper will never know in advance is the necessary and maximum gain for the CDs still to rip.

This is a very good point! Thanks for that!

So...If i have a 3 cd disc set, doesn't replay gain automatically know the levels to normalise gain/clipping anyway...I notice on a earlier thread GaryM converts these in the same format (in batch Converter) so all discs are the same..but i thought dsp gain album-track gain did this anyway.?

Also on a homemade cd ripped cd (s) that i have put all into one folder- is it still worth putting back in batch Converter (if still using same format FLAC)...??

I don't reconvert the audio of the files, I just redo the replaygain tags for the multi disk albums using RG DSP. Not sure what you mean by auto. Yes, if I select all 3 disks of a 3 disk album and rerun RG DSP to redo treating all 3 as one album then the album RG value will be same for all 3. If I didn't do this after ripping, each of the 3 discs would have different RG album tag values.

O.K. think I've got that. But what would happen if you didnt rerun RG DSP TO REDO ALL 3 DISCS..? would the sound be different, files not together..?

You may (but probably not) notice a very subtle difference in volume levels on playback.

Personally, like garym, I apply ReplayGain, post rip, to the whole multi-disc album.

However, it is not something to be too bothered about.

If not already done, install the Replay Gain R4 utility codec.

                Then:
dBpoweramp Batch Converter >> Select album folder(s) >> Convert >> Converting To: RG [ReplayGain]

select your desired Write Option and Advanced Options, then click the Convert button.

What is important to understand here is the relationship between the tracks/folder(s) selected and the Albums Identified By option (Advanced Options) that you use.

I use Album ID Tag as I know that the Album tag is consistent for all selected tracks.

I could use All Files In Batch Same Album, as long as all selected tracks belong to a single album.

Equally, I could use All Files In Same Folder, as all my tracks for a single album are in a single folder.

However, I am aware many dBpoweramp users spread a single album over several folders, where each folder is a different disc as in a multi-disc album. So for the purposes being discussed in this thread, the All Files In Same Folder option would not work for those users.

agree. I would really only possibly notice if listening to a gapless live album that spans disks, and even then only at the point where the transition takes place if listening carefully.
