dBpoweramp cannot rip any CD with Verbatim CD/DVD Writer USB-C

I recently purchased dbpoweramp and seem to be having similar problems with this Verbatim slimeline CD/DVD drive (DP88) connected to a Windows 11 pc.So far I haven't been able to rip a single track, I have set up dbpa according to the installation guide, writing the files directly to a NAS. I installed fre:ac ripping s/ware to compare - same result! The drive plays cds/dvds fine. The pop up for Accurateread worked and configured. Metadata seems fine.

Any suggestions for a new drive?! Here's the log for three tracks I tried to rip several times, the remaining tracks on the cd give the same results:

These last lines for each track are the issue. You will need to adjust the settings for allowing more than 100 frames. Look at the rest of the tracks and change this option to allow more frame re-rips.

This would suggest the disc is either dirty or damaged. dbPoweramp will try to recover as much data as possible by reading each frame as best it can, but expect it to run the drive for quite a while. I would try this with a different brand of drive first, if that is an option.

Hi and thank you for the reply. This is a fairly new and unused disc, it looks clean enough but I will try to give it a polish. I was getting the same results with all the discs I tried, some well used and could probably do with a clean. I've set the re-rip to <no abort> -if this doesn't do it (plus clean) I think I will be looking at a new drive.

Even a disc that appears clean and undamaged can have issues if it was pressed a while ago. There is a phenomenon affectionately known as "disc rot" that can be a problem. If you get similar results from another brand of drive this could be the reason. Trying a different drive would definitely be my first step though.

Thank you. With <no abort> setting and timeout set to max (100 minutes) some improvement but still not right. This recording was released in 2021, I've only had it for a few months and played maybe twice. Tried another new recording (2023) that has only been played a couple of times. I only re-ripped one track (7 minutes) because it took 50 minutes to rip - is this normal? Again slight improvement, but both rips sound crackly like an old vinyl record!

At least they are now secure! I think a new drive is in order. I found a comparison of drives produced by Spoons (although I can't find it again) which is a performance table. Most of them seem to be SATA drives rather than external drives, but I have found an external drive which is basically an LG WH16NS40 SATA in a box with a USB to the outside world for Blueray/DVD/CD - marketed by OWC, also a similar box by Asus, both of which do well in the comparison as SATA drives. Considerbly more expensive than my Verbatim drive, so a bit of a leap of faith, but not much point having the Verbatim drive if it wont rip!

You don’t have to spend a lot. I have several usb connected drives. All under $50 or free, scavenged from old computers and connected via SATA usb adapter.

Oh I hadn't thought/wasn't aware of a SATA to USB adapter, just looking at them that will carve a lot off the overall price. That's really helpful thank you!

Problem solved. New drive plus an old one extracted from a broken pc . Process not helped by purchasing a Startech SATA to usb cable that was DOA. Working cable, shiny new drive, wonderful fast and accurate ripping!

Problem worked around in new dBpoweramp for Mac beta.

I still recommend avoiding this drive, my unit produces different output depending on computer it's connected to (one Mac works OK, the other has this exact bug).
