    Profile../Naming and other..

1.In the left hand corner of CD RIPPER there is Profile >create or default...whats this for (i always use default.

2.when doing homemade cds where Metadata has to be input is it ok to leave Naming [ARTIST][TITLE] in the bottom left alone.( i always just put various artists and title in the info at the top of screen...)

    3. If a cd after ripping says error-can i take it, that it will still play..its just not accurate and secure (mines set stops at 100 pass rate.)

    4. after cds have been ripped to my computer i get a small file document above ripped cd of results of ripp.is it ok to delete this..

5.and..A little off topic,.if i put all ripped cds in one folder-ON COMPUTER then export them to a NAS in one folder will this affect how they are shown on streamer/app remote etc...later...i.e not show title of cd (this question concerns "homemade"cds not original ones. with my own metadata.)

    All help welcome.

    1. You can create different profiles, such as a Classical one with special file naming

    2. Yes you never change the naming items to actual values, as they are auto created when ripping.

    3. Yes

    4. Yes

    5. No, most NAS use the ID tags not filenames.

Thanks for help. Its just No.5. Iam still a bit stuck on..Iam doing Individual Cds (home made-inputting data) and then putting cd in its own Folder to move to NAS later is that the right/ best way...?

There's no right or best way to organize your files, other than just using a file/folder structure that makes sense to you.

Just keep in mind, though, to expand on Spoon's answer: It's typically not the folder structure that determines how your players "see" and use the files. Rather, most players access the metadata in the files and use that information to index and navigate your music library......it's the metadata that tells your player that a particular set of files should be grouped together as an album, not their organization on the hard drive. You could actually put every song file into one huge folder, but so long as the metadata is properly set, your player will still seamlessly index your albums and show them as such on your player displays. Conversely, you can put a set of files into a folder, because you want that to be an "album," but if they don't share the same ALBUM (and usually ALBUMARTIST) tag, your player will see and show them as being in different albums.

Bottom line: For those home-made albums you're ripping, ensure that all the tracks on each "album" share the same ALBUM and ALBUMARTIST tags. (Depending on your players, having different YEAR tags on the tracks can occasionally cause indexing problems as well....)

A Massive thanks for that Info. When you new to streaming its hard to see how the end result.. -well ends up!

You have just prompted another question(s) though. Can I take then my Homemade various Comps wont be in separate folders-even though i grouped them into sep. folders with the same title Header.

Will a Streamer group them a-z - Or does this depend on Which streamer /remote / app you use..?

Sorry with my lack of Knowledge but also unsure -do I use streamer app/ plex/kodi...Or just try a few and see which clicks with me.

Thanks again for Info-Brody boy-Looks like Spoon wont be out of a job anytime soon.......

No problem....a lot of the knowledge around here (mine and others') just comes from a lot of trial & error with these things. Happy to share the lessons learned from all our mistakes!

You have just prompted another question(s) though. Can I take then my Homemade various Comps wont be in separate folders-even though i grouped them into sep. folders with the same title Header.
If I'm understanding your question, you seem to be wondering if the files get re-organized....? The answer to that is no. Again, the way that files are organized on your hard drive is just something you decide based on how it makes sense to you. This doesn't get changed by the player programs, which simply access the files for playback.* The point is that players depend on the information...metadata...stored within the files, not the physical folder organization, to determine which sets of files are supposed to be displayed as albums.

If you grouped your homemade compilations into folders, the files will remain in those folders. But again, their tags must be properly set for your players to see them as albums. Specifically, they all need to have the same ALBUM and ALBUMARTIST tag. (These can be anything you want, by the way. Doesn't have to be any of the original ALBUM tags.)

              * One exception is iTunes, which will actually rename & re-arrange our files if you have that option checked in the library settings. It's really obnoxious....

Will a Streamer group them a-z - Or does this depend on Which streamer /remote / app you use..?
It does depend on the particular streamer/app/player you use, but most of them, by default, do display lists in alphabetical order (except track lists, which are usually shown in track order). But they typically allow you to sort the display different ways if you want. This is entirely independent of how the files are organized on the hard drive.

Here's how most players do it: They read your whole music library (i.e., the internal metadata of all the files), and create their own internal index of it. Then when you are looking at the player's user interface, it's using that info to display your library. Most players offer different views, like Artist View, Album View, whatever...but they're just sorting a view of their own index data, not doing anything with the music files themselves.

Sorry with my lack of Knowledge but also unsure -do I use streamer app/ plex/kodi...Or just try a few and see which clicks with me.
Not sure what the question is, but you definitely want to try out a few options. It hurts nothing to make a mistake and have to go back and refine the tags to make it work the way you want. In fact, that's the best way to learn about your player's behavior. (Tags can always be edited after the fact....doesn't effect the audio files at all.)

Hint: Most players will take quite awhile to index a very large library. So if you're just experimenting to see what tagging scheme works best with your player, do that with just a handful of albums so that you don't have to wait a long time for re-indexing after every change you make. Which raises another important point....you need to make sure that your player re-indexes before you can see the effect of your changes. Many players re-index on a schedule and don't automatically "see" changes right away, but they'll let you "force" a re-index whenever you want.

Thanks again...Just one more point (for now) if i put a different date. on a comp cd -homemade... for each date different..could that confuse a streamer and mix up data...I picked up that up in your earlier comment.
In any case i will keep one year for all comp cd just in case. The year things not important to me really...nor rating.

Not clear if this is what you mean, but the potential problem with different dates relates to a different date PER TRACK on a compiliation CD. It is certainly OK for different compilation CDs to have different dates for the entire CD.

Garym's explanation is exactly what I meant. And it's not a universal problem with all streamers/players, but I've definitely seen it before. So just to ensure the desired compilation behavior with all potential players, I think it makes sense to pre-empt those issues by ensuring that each compilation has a consistent ALBUM, ALBUMARTIST, and YEAR tag.

Sure, you can leave the YEAR tag empty. Star rating doesn't affect tagging.
