    Basic Tagging Question

    Hi all,

I have ripped a CD which CD ripper could not find the Metadata. "Right Clicking" on the song file I can edit tag. I've added artist/album etc & CD cover details etc. Unfortunately after a scan it has produced each song, not under the CD folder which is where it is. Please see attached picture. In this case it is album called Dome.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is driving me nuts!!Click image for larger version

each track has different track artist. you need to add ALBUM ARTIST tag to the files (with identical artist name). Also, adjust your dynamic file naming to use album artist when creating subdirectories-file names...

when you are ripping CDs, lower LEFT hand side of screen has a place where you set the harddrive directory you are ripping to and the "dynamic naming" string used to tell it how to name your files.

          Hi garym,

Thank you again for the excellent advice.

I will have a "play" with Dynamic file naming!

here's the string I use. It automatically deals with multi disk albums, compilation albums, album artist, if it exists.

            Code:
            [IFCOMP]Compilations\[album] [IFMULTI] \Disc [disc][]\[track]-[title]-[artist][][IF!COMP][IFVALUE]album artist,[album artist],[artist][]\[album][IFMULTI] \Disc [disc][]\[track]-[title][]

Would I just copy/paste that in?

& thank you in advance. You are most helpful, greatly appreciated.

yes, click on "SET" next to your string, that takes you to a popup where you can simply paste in that string.

                      Hi all,

                      Question 2....!

As we can see from attached pic, that it shows the CD/Track but not the artist. How would I go about adding artist name along side the track?

I suspect that the artist info is in the file, but your player is only showing the Album Artist for the album. If you look at one of these files in your file explorer, then right click it and select "edit id tag" from popup menu, do you see the ARTIST info for the track? If so, the artist data is there. The problem is that your PLAYER is not showing it. So making it show up would require a setting on your player and has nothing to do with tagging. What happens when you play an album that is not a compilation? I assume the correct artist shows up in your player then. Correct?

                          Hi Gary,

                          Thank you for your help.

Looking at "edit id tag" if you add artist to title tag then (as attached pic shows) then you can resolve this.

Rather annoying as I have "loads" like this.

Ho hum, every days a school day!!

What is your player? The issue is with the player and how it works (or the settings in the player). Your fix is a workaround by "forcing" the title to contain the artist as well. If you want to use this work around, here's how to do it in a batch way.

                            1. install mp3tag from here:

                            2. open mp3tag, load up all your files. filter on COMPILATION tag =1 or on VARIOUS ARTISTS (i.e., somehow just get all your compilation/various artists CDs in the mp3tag active window.

3.Select the files in right side window.

                            4. in mp3tag menu choose CONVERT, then "tag to tag"

                            5. in FIELD select or type TITLE
                            6. in FORMAT STRING enter: %title% - %artist%
                            7. then click OK

test on one album first until you're sure its working as you want. But basically you could fix thousands of CDs with a couple of mouse clicks.

Does it matter that my files are a mixture of Flac/WAV?

My player is a Naim NDS.
