I ripped some of my CDs to .wav, then created .m4a AAC files for use on my MP3 player. When I move the folders to the MP3 player, they're listed as "unknown." The songs are there, the artist and song names are listed, and they play fine, but they're all in one disorganized "folder" called "unknown." I tried ripping directly to .m4a and had the same problem. The previous program I was using didn't do this, so it's not the MP3 player. I even tried moving songs from the "unknown" section to an existing named folder within the MP3 player, but the songs no longer show up, unless they're in the unknown section. It's really weird. Has anyone had this problem before?

What is your mp3 player?
Right click on one of your m4a files >> Edit ID Tags, does it contain ID Tags? -
Re: MP3 player doesn't recognize folder names created with dBpoweramp
Perhaps the player cannot read m4a tags (the official apple ones that everyone uses).
Some players will only read id3 tags, but these are not valid in m4a files.Comment

Re: MP3 player doesn't recognize folder names created with dBpoweramp
Are m4a tags the default tag when ripping to .wav? I tried moving uncompressed .wav folders and have the same problem. The songs themselves are listed, but only in the unknown folder.Comment

Wave, mp3, FLAC they all have different tag types, dBpoweramp correctly writes the correct tag type for any given format.Comment

Re: MP3 player doesn't recognize folder names created with dBpoweramp
Thank you for all the responses. What would you suggest at this point? I did notice that dBpoweramp (by default) writes things differently than my previous program. For example dBpoweramp writes "01 <artist name> - <song name>.<file extension>" and my previous program writes "01. <song name>.<file extension>" Would this have anything to do with it?Comment

Re: MP3 player doesn't recognize folder names created with dBpoweramp
These are filenames, a player which is showing unknown would be trying to read the embedded ID Tags.
There is little you can do except switch to mp3 which I am certain it would read the id tags for.Comment

Re: MP3 player doesn't recognize folder names created with dBpoweramp
One more question, if you don't mind. When doing batch conversion, it won't create a folder name for the artist and album. For example, if I direct dBpoweramp to convert the files to "new folder," all the files will be listed inside without any folders separating them. I've tried using the dynamic settings, but I can't figure out which setting to use. It should automatically create these folders by default, shouldn't it?Comment

Set dynamic to:
[artist]\[album]\[origfilename]Comment
