Different album art for different encoders....

    Hi again

I promise I am almost there and will quieten down soon with all the questions!

This one is about album art. After looking into it, I have decided to NOT embed album art... I'm going to go with the folder.jpg route instead for both my FLAC (to be used with foobar) and mp3s (to be used with iPod Classic). I've seen that I can use ID Tag Processing to use different artwork per encoder. My questions are:

    1. Do the settings in ID Tag Processing always override those in the Main Options?
    2. If I set different parameters for MP3 and FLAC, will DBPA download two separate and sdifferent album art files accordingly?
    3. In the ID Tag Processing DSP, there are dro pdown menus for each parameter. Can I type into the fields rather than choose from the drop down menus (not enough choice in those)?

    Many thanks

Which main options? If talking about sizes, the main options come first, then ID Tag Processing happens after.

    3. Which exact fields? many of the fields you can type into.

So by the sounds of it the DSP has the final say? For example, if I had 2000x2000 in the "Main Options", but 450x450 in the DSP, 450x450 would always be the max size and 2000x2000 would be ignored?

I was referring to things like Max Pixel Size and File Size on the DSP Manipulation page. Are the values in the drop down just there for convenience (commonly used ones etc)? Are ANY/ALL values allowed? Can I type in anything?

      Hope that clarifies.

      Cheers

The 2000x2000 would be processed first, then the later DSP effects yes.

You can type any number there.

          Thanks for that.

Unfortunately, I cannot get set up to do what I want though....

Basically, I would like to be able to use ANY album art for the FLAC. But I would like the mp3 album art to be no larger than, say, 300x300, with a file size no bigger than ??kb.

          Is that possible?

          Cheers

I should add that I am not set on using the ID Tag Processing DSP. I just want to get different artwork for FLAC/mp3 by whatever means (and preferably/hopefully during the multi-encoder ripping process rather than after the fact).....

Thanks to one and all for the invaluable help.

Set the main options to 2000x2000 then in Multi encoder just for mp3 use the ID Tag Processing DSP set to 300x300

Just tried that and no luck. I'm still getting the same folder.jpg file in each folder.... Any other ideas? Cheers

That was not set to anything so hopefully that's where I was going wrong. I'm not at home until later but will try it as soon as I get back. Fingers crossed! Thanks for sticking with me....

In the meantime, I've been chatting on HydrogenAudio about why it is so common to use the filename "folder.jpg" for album art. The discussion is here:

As stated there, I'm keen to know whether DBPA can assign the album name to the artwork instead of "folder". Have not been able to find the option. All I could see was the option "Write to [output folder]\" is the Metadata options. But when I select that I get album artwork PER TRACK. Is there a way to get one piece of artwork PER ALBUM which take son the name of the album?

                    Many thanks

                      You can change to [album].jpg

but very few programs will work with that.

I think Foobar does, and I'll be using that both for playing my FLACs and transferring my mp3s to ipod (using foo_dop). However, whilst I have no plans to use anything other than Foobar, who knows what the future might hold? Don't want to stumble into any problems in the future....

So perhaps I'll stick to folder.jpg. Or cover.jpg (someone said they had issues with Windows Media player changing ALL their folder.jpg files to a different size automatically. Don't want that!) And whilst I don't like the idea of thousands of pieces of artwork with the same name, on the other hand: 1) Files re-organising themselves or getting moved is unlikely, and 2) With a good back up regime if the worse should happen I can use back ups to reload everything. Plus, 3) I could always delete and re-tag ALL artwork in the event of an issue.

                        Thanks for the heads up

I use "cover.jpg" in each album subdirectory. It works with foobar2000, it works with my squeezebox players, etc. (And if you have WMP on your computer, you should go into its settings and untick every option that allows it to do *anything* with your audio files. It can change artwork, etc. without your explicit permission.)

Just tried that now (although I chose "cover" instead of "folder") and still no change. The same artwork (302kb and 1000x1000) is still being saved in both the FLAC and Mp3 folders.... I changed filenaming back to folder, just in case, but that likewise made no difference.

                            Any other ideas?

If it helps, here are the settings I currently have:

                            *****Main Options:
                            Max. Pixel Size: 2000x2000
                            Max. File Size: 2000KB
                            Write to [output folder]: cover.jpg

                            *****ID Tag Processing DSP (manipulation)
                            Export to: cover.jpg
                            Import from: none
                            Max. Pixel Size: 300x300
                            Max. File Size: any
                            Force embedded to JPEG: Unchecked.

The DSP is in the Mp3 encoder and NOT in the flac encoder.

                            Cheers

(PS - Gary - the only thing I found which looked relevant in the WMP settings was in the > Media Library tab > "Automatic media information updates for files.... Update my music files...." I unchecked that and everything below it greyed out as a result. And I've changed whatever else I thought might cause problems. Cheers)
