Release 14.4: cd drive disappears and cannot be found

Ripping fine until part way through the CD, dBpoweramp errors out and my CD drive disappears. Reboot PC, CD drive is there until I start ripping another CD. Updated Windows 7 and reinstalled R14.4. Same problem continues. R14.3 was working fine. Can/should I reinstall R14.3 or install R15 beta? Desperate for a fix. Half way through ripping a large CD library!

A disappearing CD drives means it is internally crashing (the CD drive), this should never happen. You can try to disable some advanced options if they are set (such as c2 pointers).
